Hey does anybody know if this book is going to take the place of the old cave diving manual I know I just recently finishe my basic with Jill Heinerth and the book seemed like it needed to be updated.

I already know the wifes response,"dont you have enough books on cavediving".And Ill say"they all have something else to teach you" or Ill just pick up a copy without her Knowing and when she sees it Ill tell her"Ive had that book a long time"maybe scuff up the cover a little too.

I have to say this book covers subjects that you've never seen in print so completely.

I think the word "They" is the problem here. More than one organization prints books about cave diving. PSA recently released a book. There are also "Student Workbooks" that some people refer to as "Manuals".

THe CDS Cave Diving Manual was simply reprinted; the information is much older.

What the hell is is going on with the NSS / CDS?

Received this email tonight:

Dear Cave Diver,

You have recently ordered a copy of Cave Diving Articles and Opinions through our PayPal link on our web site. Some members of the NSS-CDS Board of Directors, have voiced personal objections to the cover photo, which portrays NSS-CDS Cave Diving Instructor #289, Larry Green - a noted pioneer and respected member of our community.

At the moment, the NSS-CDS Board is withholding my stock of books and therefore I am temporarily unable to fulfill your order. I believe that this issue can be resolved in the next few days and that I will be able to expedite your book. If this is not resolved by next Tuesday, January 6, 2009, I will contact you again about initiating refunds. If you would like a refund earlier, please email me directly at *...* and we will take care of it immediately.

I take pride in my integrity and count many of you as my dear friends. I hope you can understand the frustration and anguish over these events. If you want to help speed the process, please email or phone the Board members and tell them to expedite the distribution of the book in its current form.

Contact: Kelly Jessop chairman@nsscds.org

Thanks for your support.

Apparently some people would rather waste money fixing something thats NOT broke. I wish I could get my copy with the original cover, looks quality to me! Looks like Jill can't sell her own books, friggin sweet eh?

Definately some people out there that need to get a grip on reality.

Ya think? I picked up a copy at Cathy's the day before the recall. I didn't pay any attention to the cover. It was a cave diver. He was wearing red and was in a cave. Out the door I went.

I've always thought that there was something wrong with a lot of the cave divers in FL. Egos and the biggest fights I've ever seen. I am a moderator on several fora. One fellow moderator was all in a tizzy over an online fight. I calmed him down. I gave some examples of what caver divers do when they disagree. So then he realized what we were going through wasn't so bad afterall.

It's a frigging picture of a cave diver. It looks nice. Maybe there's back story that Jill didn't know about and maybe a different picture would have been better. But deal with that on the second edition! This is nuts!

I'll write my email supporting the book being back on the shelves in the online ordering system.

Yup and when the CDS elections come up, remember that you can vote the incumbents in (who sanctioned this BS) or you can vote them out and vote in new people with some brains. I know who I'll be casting my vote for....anyone who is NOT currently on the Board of the CDS.

Oh yeah, I got my copy before the embargo and it is really a great book.

I would sum up my perspective of the CDS actions, as a suggestion to Jill:

don't deal with the devil even if you think you know him.

And how did her legal advisor allow her give up her control?

She and the authors and all of us deserve better than the CDS.
Maybe they'll put a picture of the CDS Board of Directors on the cover?

I hate to get into this but here goes. The BOD is responding to complaints by members. They didn't make this up all by themselves. I know because someone left me on the BOD email list after resigned from the UWS editor gig. I do not think a decision has been made, they have to take in what people say, how much it would cost to fix the books etc. A lot of negotiating with Jill and others went into this book. Not to mention a lot of CDS funds. No one is trying to pick on anybody. The BOD is not out to get Jill and I feel it's unfortunate that she sent that email out with any orders.

What you can do is if you are a member then email the BOD with your opinion. Make a formal request. Show up at the next BOD meeting and say WTF if you want.

The CDS would love to sell books and have the money now if they can. They also have to respond to members wishes and complaints.

Right now I don't want to support the NSS/CDS "nonsense" or wait for the book or be stuck with their new improved cover.

So if anyone wants to sell me their old used book, I'll pay extra!
That way the CDS doesn't get $ from me and I still get the book.
And the seller can buy the new version if they want and have $ left over.

PM me and lets make a deal

I usually don't get involved in these discussions, but maybe some of you should re-read Cindy's post. To me, it doesn't appear the CDS BOD is doing anything other than what they were voted in to do - represent the members, all the members. The BOD received a complaint. In turn they received some supporting e-mails and non-supporting e-mails. The correct thing to do is hold off distribution while they review the situation. Why doesn't everyone just wait to see what the BOD decides before you start slamming them? And this may take a few days. What we're reading on the Internet may not be the only thing that is involved here. I'm sure the BOD will do the right thing, whatever that is. Until then, my opinion is on hold. I believe others should do the same.

Any chance the CDS will ever tell us the real motivation for their actions?

Honorable men do odd things sometimes to protect their organizations and indirectly their members. Some would call them dishonorable things.

How do we not insist on openness in the CDS?
Or do we not want it?

Richard

The motivation has been explained already, also maligned, misinterpreted, mistated, and misunderstood. Please try to remember that Jill is selling the book to make money for Jill. The CDS is selling the book to make money to support the CDS and it's membership.

Frank,

Jill is the most generous person I know and ALWAYS willing to freely give knowledge/experience to any one who wishes. There are many out there that won't even talk to you unless you are paying them. Don't say that Jill is ONLY in it for the money; it is also a desire to give the community a quality resource.

To beat all the semantic arguers; I know he didn't use the word ONLY but the implication says it loud and clear.

If Jill had done this for the money she wouldn't have done it. There are far more profitable ways to make money than this book.

Jerry
