I just picked up a couple of spools to stick in my drysuit pocket as I wanted a backup to my safety reel and I wanted to have more than one reel to do jumps with.
I've never used a spool before and just wanted to double check on how they should be used before I bungle it up on a dive.
I'm assuming you unclip the d-ring from the spool and loop the line around the mainline like you would a normal jump reel. Then, connect to the other line and use the d-ring to connect the spool back onto itself. Does that sound about right?
What do you do with the d-ring when you are unspooling and spooling up line?

Similar to reel but to lock the spool, you just clip the bolt snap to the spool with the line running in the bolt snap hole that is clipped. Then loop around jump/main line and clip the other hand of the bold snap to the jump line.
As for what to do with the bolt snap while using the spool. On short jump, I usually just hold it. If it's more than 5' or so, I clip it to my light.
Also if you have a lot of lines on your spool, it is easy for it to unclip by itself. See this http://thedecostop.com/forums/showpost.php?p=324515&postcount=5

The double-ender is also real handy when you are winding the line back up; just clip it onto the line in front of the spool and use it to guide the line back onto the spool. You can almost "wind" the spool back up this way. It will make sense when you try it in the water.

Sweet. That was exactly the info that I was looking for. I would've tried locking the spool in place wrong.
Thank you guys very much for the tips!
And I just noticed...by "d-ring" in my original post I meant bolt snap.
Sheesh, where is my head today.
I also do a quick wrap inside the end of the snap before I snap it onto the spool on the tie in to keep her snug.

Ooooo, two goodies I'll be using now. Thanks!
