Hi guys!

new to the forum, but i have a padi open water ticket!
Im studying product design at the university of derby, UK and am doing my final year major project on scuba diving head protection. Mainly looking at cave and wreck diving!

I need some market research, so please if you've got 2mins could you fill this quick questionnaire out!
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Zcb_2bxVXgELFdd9YbM_2fUsUA_3d_3d

I'd also like to hear your view on this, do you guys use any specific head protection products at the moment? do you think its nesssecary for cave diving? i'd like to hear anything you've got to say!

Thanks very much! any help appreciated!

Rhys

Filled out your survey. I don't use a helmet now and I don't think I'll need one unless I start scootering sidemount. Diving backmount gives some inherent head protection since that is the highest part of your profile. I think sump divers would probably have more use for them than spring/sink divers. Either way, good luck with the project!

Filled out. Even though I've cut my head once while scootering, I don't think I'd benefit from a helmet. If I had been wearing a hood the cut probably would not have occurred. It was my own fault for taking my eyes off the cave while trying to equalize a sinus and choosing the incorrect descent angle. I should have taken my finger off the trigger or paid closer attention. Hurt like heck and probably won't happen again. Pain is an effective educator!

To make matters worse it was caught on video!

Your questionair. I don't use a helmet, instead wear a neopream hood. A bump on the head at the slow speed I swim is not too sever. A helmet may increase drag and gas consumption. But since I haven't ever worn one it pure spectulation.

A suggestion. In the US, we call "goggles" a dive mask (as opposed to a full face mask)

I wear a hood in low visibility (mostly sump diving), and while on a scooter.

Just filled out your survey. I use a helmet on all cave dives and during filming of shark sequences in open water. A good set of coms (OTS) set into a good, lightweight helmet that can accommodate both full face mask and standard diving mask would be useful to me. We end up cutting up our helmets to fit our full face masks.
Best of luck with your survey.

I took the survey and good luck on that. However, I think you're missing some useful data. After your question of (paraphrased) "Would a helmet benefit you?", you follow with "If yes..."

I think you might find some useful/interesting replies if you offered an alternate of "If no, why not?" and left it open to be filled in.
