These are great for sidemount, stage and o2 regs. They allow the diver to be able to reach the second stage at a much better angle and prevent the second stage from trying to pull itself out of your mouth, especially when you have the hose looped around your neck. They are much safer than the old "swivel" type adapters.

They are not really necessary (or recommended) for backmounted doubles.
