Took my cavern class with Johnny Richards this weekend at Ginnie. What a fantastic experience! I learned so much, and was humbled many times. I would reccomend this class to absolutely anyone who asks, especially if they just want to become a better diver.

Spent Friday doing practice dives in the ballroom with my buddy for the class. I practiced just about everything I could think of, and our can lights scared many-an open water diver. We even got a couple of nasty snarls from instructors/DM's.

Saturday was all classroom and surface drills. We did a 'practice dive' Saturday night, and headed home for a nights rest. I was so excited about the class, I didn't sleep much all weekend.

Up early Sunday morning for 4 dives, a short lunch break, and classroom ending with the test. The first three dives were in the ballroom, with Johnny springing the duct tape masks, and surprise air-shares on us. The last dive was in the Ear, and I will never forget that dive. There was a feeling of awe and inspiration that came over me upon entering that cavern...something I've never felt before. I got bit, badly. Next up is more training after I get comfortable at this level!

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. Thank you to Johnny for a fantastic class and all of the knowledge he passed on to me, and an especially big thank you to Rich Courtney who rented me some of his personal regs when I was in a jam with mine. He bailed me out big time, and he's truly a life saver. Both gentlemen are class acts.

Ah, so that was you guys! We had a couple scooter teams go by us. I agree, great guys. I will most certainly be training with both of them.

P.S. I think you may have buzzed by my classmates, not my buddy and I.

Truthfully, I have no idea what time we were in the ear. I could check my computer in the morning...but we got our shortly before the afternoon rain storm. I would venture to guess we were there around noon. Thanks, it's great to be here! :D

Absolutely! I intend to go somewhat crazy cavern diving this summer and fall while I gear up (mentally, physically, and equipment-wise) for intro. Peacock, Ginnie, Paradise, and several others are within a 3 hour drive from me, so I'm pretty lucky.

All the best,
Danny

congrats on the cavern cert. Don't forget about Madison it has a great cavern. Just go straight up 75 to SR 6. From Oralndo it should be about a 3 hour drive.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but congrats! My buddy and I did our Cavern certs with Johnny last fall and we're going back this fall for Intro and Apprentice with him. Just filed my flight info with my class paperwork today; I can't wait!

(and yes, I've found it IS an addiction....)

I am pretty certain you will absolutely love intro! I thought cavern was fun too, but I have since discovered that there is no feeling like being a few hundred feet back in a system. The best part is the lights out air shares!! Seriously, those were fun!

Congrats on passing cavern with Johnny!

I'm very late to respond... Just joined cavediver.net But I do believe you passed me and my dive buddy. I am a average sized guy, and there was a rather large lady I was on the log with. I am taking my intro on October 25-26! I am so Excited!!!

Safe diving!
