No success in finding a video of how to do this kick.

Anyone know of a site?

This raises a question of semantics. Are you talking about the relatively common "reverse frog kick" or a type of frog kick that you use to back up?

I used to dive with a buddy that used the "reverse frog kick" most of the time. With the normal frog kick, the bottom of your feet are on the power stroke. With the reverse, it's the top of your feet on the power stroke. It's almost like a dolphin kick turned sideways.

The reverse frog kick doesn't usually silt up much, unless you're going through a narrow passage. Then it silts like crazy.

But I'm assuming you want a kick to back up with.

So, what do you call the kick to go backwards?

Back-up kick?

Since the term "reverse frog kick" is already in the nomenclature it confuses things. Like when people use the term "inflator hose" to describe the BC's corrugated hose that goes between the BC and the inflator. The correct term is "airway." Because "inflator hose" refers to the low-pressure hose that goes between the first stage and the inflator.

Gotta stay consistent.:ele

I just thought of something: we need to make sure we spell it right. "Back-up kick" would be a kick we use to go backwards. "Backup kick" would be a kick we don't normally use, but we hold in reserve for when other kicks fail.

How serious should I take a nomenclature discussion found on a place called Cave Diver's Forum?

Gotta love redundancy. :)

Could be a "Static 180 Degree Vector" kick so it can't be confused with the redunant version.

I personally don't use it -- I just will myself to go in the opposite direction and it happens ;)

The force is strong with this one.

I just put my hand down and push off what ever clay bank or soda straw that happens to be near me. I find it is the most effective way to stop myself or to backup. Or to go forward really. A touch contact method of proposal seems to be optimal in all situations: cave diving, open water diving or high diving. On the days when I am worried about conservation, I use the reverse modified flutter kick.
