Hi Bill
It may be of interest to you but the Dave Shaw story has just been released in South Africa in book called "Raising the Dead" which is to be released in teh States shortly.
I am sure that the book is going to create some debate.
Cheers Dries

The book was for sale at the NSS-CDS conference, where I picked up a copy. Very well told, and it captures ones attention in multiple ways. I spoke with Don Shirley there and he was very easy to talk to. I might even be convinced to go to South Africa summer 2010 to dive and for the World Cup!
The book is very good, I highly recommend it.

I bought the book at the conference, but haven't had a chance to crack it open yet. Nice to know it is a good read. Thanks.

Be sure you have the time to read it before you open it up. I could not put it down.

Book is an absolute page turner.
Be sure to let us know when you are down in South Africa, we will be sure to find you some holes to dive in.
Badgat (or Komati springs) where Don is based is loads of fun, Boesmansgat (as you, by know have read) is absolutely mind blowing.

haha Me too! I'm glad I waited until I had the time because it was something I didn't want to put down. It was a well written story of both Don and Dave, and the caves they were diving. A lot about how they pushed the limits of rebreathers then. I wished I knew what those guys were doing back in 2002. I started cave diving in 1998 but never knew what was being done in South Africa.

Could you recommend where to find the book in US? I googled it and found online only amazon UK and a website in Australia... I would rather buy online, it's more convenient but if it's Florida I can order or pick it up on a trip.
Thanks!

I'm not sure if they still have any or not, but I ordered it from this post.

I remember reading about this tragic accident last year when I started to consider getting formally trained in cave diving. I just recently spoke to Russell about it, and he told me about the recovery operation of Mr. Shaw body. He also told me about the book "Raising the Dead".
What went wrong with David Shaw's equipment?

Don Shirley's talk at the NSS-CDS workshop was riveting. I'm not a medical person but what I gathered from his and Dr. Simon Mitchell's comments was that the increased effort at extreme depth when he got entangled led to a CO-2 buildup problem that was unreversable. Very sobering stuff.

From reading the book and listening to Simon Mitchell's talk during the DAN Tech Conference back in January it was more than just the equipment (which BTW seems to have done what it was supposed to do within its limitations).
The YouTube video is not completely clear, I think that Simon's explanation in conjunction with the video exerpts are better.
If you are a current DAN member you can download the mp4 of the talk, it's posted in DAN's website. If not, find someone who's a member to download it (better yet, become a DAN member!) for you. IT's worth the effort and if you are a CCR diver it will make things more interesting.

I have a question about something I read in the book. It mentioned some of the regulators (Scubapro Mark 25/X-650) were out-of-the-box, instead of modified for deep diving. How exactly did Don modify these for deep diving? I've been certified by Scubapro for over twelve years and supposedly "know all the tricks," but I was never taught anything about modifying them for deep diving. Is it something as simple as raising the IP, or what? Does anybody know what he was doing to these regs?

Maybe changing the spring to increase the IP as some others have done?

PS Wasn't Don at one of the workshops here in NFL talking and promoting the book? Maybe someone asked him and can elucidate further....
