Shecks book was a requirement for cavern class.Looking back thru it some things are sure different. The tape used as line arrows? Thanks Forrest for your plastic design. The dualvalve manifold inwhich the left tank has no knob? All in all a good book, but Im puzzeled about the diver on the cover.Hand finning and letting his spg and backup reg dangle?Maybe thats an example of what a cave diver shouldnt look like.Oh and the hand sign for a bent diver, might be mistaken for a gay diver.I hope noone comes up to me doing that one.

You can still find some of those old dorff markers in some off the beaten path side tunnels....
It is a great little book.

Before the line in the Big/Bone was changed, there used to be one hear the big rock pillar before you got to the Mapleleaf.

Hey Kelly - remember that line you, I and Harvey Boyd replaced in Lafayette [Green] had several duct tape dorf markers on it :)

The dual valve manifold inwhich the left tank has no knob?
With modern manifolds, neither tank has a handwheel; the handwheel corresponds to the outlet. With the old Selpak manifold, one outlet is over the right tank, and the other is in the middle. There is no isolator. What appeard to be an isolator is the handwheel for the middle outlet.
...,but Im puzzeled about the diver on the cover. Hand finning and letting his spg and backup reg dangle? Maybe thats an example of what a cave diver shouldnt look like.
You left out:
Closed heel fins,
No bottoms to the wetsuit (sorry Jean),
improper position (trim),
And I suspect:
no backup light,
no knife,
no reel,
no training,
no plan........

You said it, changed....
Ther are some still found in some silty side tunnels in Peacock and other places, the cool thing is that it always looks like I am the first in many years to see them again, not that it is the case, just feels that way.... :-)

The CDS conference a couple years ago on the history of cave diving had some interesting things in it - some of the old lights, reels, etc. Pretty neat seeing how quickly and how far the sport has progressed.

The tape used as line arrows?
Some of the caves overseas (France namely) still have those.

In Germany some of the caves have a knot system in the line rather than arrows...the knots give distance info as well as direction. Bill

I am not sure what he meant by the "tank" hand signal, but the bent diver signal is a limp hand hanging down, like a gay person might wave :-)

Yes but the signs are the same(sheck's book does not have the "tank" sign), this is fingers together like holding something and a motion up and down
