View Full Version : 3 new additions to the family...
So I'm out cave hunting today when I come across something completely unexpected!
And no it wasn't a new virgin cave...

Here's momma feeding them:

We found them along a river burrowed down in that hole that the mom dug for her pups. She looked like she hadn't eaten well for a while (you can count her ribs). The pups look pretty well fed, though. I'm sure there were more but they probably got buried by the mom sometime over the past week. When we pulled up in the van, we saw her burrowed down. She growled at us when we got out but a little food soon made her our best friend. She even felt comfortable enough to leave her pups behind with me while going to beg my wife to take all of them home. And yes, we did. There wasn't a house for quite a few miles where we found her and the pups, so she was obviously dumped there.
Oh, and this is not the first time we've adopted a pet either while diving or looking for diving spots.

What caves were you looking for? Might make for appropriate names :)

Sounds like she and her pups landed in a good home!

I have 3 dogs that I found here in N Florida. Found 2 at dive sites and named Swuannee and Harper (found @ Little River), the other I found at Dive Outpost. They are the best dogs, you are wonderful people.

Our lab was dumped on the side of the road as pup - in Kansas - we lived in Indiana at the time and my wife (girlfriend way back then) was interning at a zoo there. Funny story as I am from Kansas so both my dog and I are from Kansas. Our German Shepherd we rescued when someone left him at the vet next door to where my wife worked. She brought him home to foster and we decided to keep him. We have fostered and found homes for several dogs over the years since then.
Rescued dogs are the best dogs! Three Cheers for you!

Don't fall for that one:yawinkle:

LOL. We discussed this on PM not too long ago. We're planning a river canoe trip pretty soon.

Yes, they are! All the dogs I've ever had have been rescues. This is the first time I've come across puppies, though. And I mean real puppies. These two haven't even opened their eyes yet!

And people that rescue strays are the best people.

This really puts the spotlight on the need to spay and neuter all pets, unless you're a breeder. What infuriates me is the macho attitude that so many men have about neutering their male dog. You'd think it was THEIR testicles on the line here. So instead, their male dogs roam the neighborhood causing litters that never should be.
Folks, if you're not a breeder, FIX YOUR DOG!

Bless you, RN and Mrs. RN.
And yes, Ginnie was fixed before her first heat.

I couldn't have said it better...on all counts.
My dog was a purebred and I had her spayed, she was an awesome dog. Next dog, when I'm in the position to care for one properly, will be from the pound or a stray.

When my last dog died I decided to take a break from animals for a while,a few months later a sickly yellow lab mix puppy showed up at the house.Rockys now 3 years old and is by far the best dog Ive ever owned.

I completely agree. We have 3 other rescues right now, all of them pure breeds - a shepherd, a st bernard, and a weimereiner. We even have the weim's papers. All 3 made their 1st visit to the vet within a month of coming home. Now I just need to find out when it will be okay to get Matti fixed. I've never had a new mom so I'm in completely unfamiliar territory here.
I have a good dog story. Not my dogs, but here's the story.
Tennessee has an Elephant Reserve or is it Preserve? The owners take in Elephants no longer wanted by zoo's or circus, etc., usually because they killed a handler. Instead of putting them to death, the killer elephant (most likely a long history of abuse from the dead handler) is purchased by the preserve and given a "retirement" home.
A couple of years ago, the Nashville Scuba Club was asked to come in and clean out a small spring fed lake so that the preserve area could be expanded to that area and the elephants territory could now include a lake to play in. We cleaned out old boards full of nails, oil drums full of concrete and spikes (an old dock collapsed), and other dangerous stuff.
The place is several thousand acres surrounded by a Jurassic Park like fence and entry gate. A huge "dormitory" barn houses the elephants who have a free run of the area, so you may or may not see any in the "dormitory."
Well, one day a stray dog showed up and was instantly claimed by one of the Elephants! They soon became inseparable. When we were there, the elephant was spotted on hillside, with other elephants grazing nearby. But no dog. "I thought you said the dog (forgot the dog's name) never left the elephant's side?" I asked the manager. She said, "Just wait." Well, no sooner did she say that then the elephant let out a bellow that shook trees and in a minute or two that dog came running over the hillside, right up to the elephant, and sat down between her two front legs. She lowered her trunk as if putting an arm around the dog and the two of them sat/stood there as the sun set over the hillside. amazing.

I'd pay money to see that!

Excellent, It is so hard to turn down a puppy that needs a good home. I have two that are like my kids. I work long days sometimes, and after moving to Florida I bought them a big outside dog kennel and am about finished on a 12x16' dog ''shed'' complete with tv and a/c for those hot summer days...

Well, did it "go"? :-D

My husband and I have 3 rescued dogs. Our female "Maddie" was pregnant when she was turned in to the pound and they aborted her pups and spayed her. She is so amazing I wish we had all her pups too! I wholeheartedly agree that rescues are the best dogs and the people who adopt them are the best people. Good for all of you who've done so!

Amen!! It all comes down to personal responsibility...which seems to be a dying concept these days.

Jst as FYI,
I found out that neither Lafayette county or madison county (I think) has animal control
so people drive to suwannee county to dump their pets so they get picked up.
even worse!
