I got my trans pac together for sidemount. I've tried it in a pool. Little differant than backmount. A good differant.

A question I switched the inflator hose to the bottom of the wing and put the over pressure valve on the upper part of the wing.

How will this affect the operation of the wing.

I thought for gear config. it's good, but would like some veteran SM divers input

Thanks in advance
Jerome

You may find that you are foot heavy since a majority of your lift is now at your shoulders. I've used my wing in the standard position for years, and I've used tire inner tube to protect the elbow and section of corrugated hose that would stick up.

Kelly - Not sure but I think he ment he unscrewed the dump and hose and switched them around, leaving the wing in it's original position. If this is true then I think he will like it.

I learned this from my Armadillo, it's how it's set up when I bought it. I did the samething to my frankenpack (transpac w/modified dual rec wing)

Tie a piece of bungee below the oral inflator with a small clip on the other end. Bring the hose across your chest and clip it to a D-ring. Switching the hose and dump valve around and clipping it across your chest does a number of things for you.

1) puts your power inflator button and your dry suit inflator in the same spot on your body.

2) now you can run your LP inflator hose under your arm rather than over your shoulder. Makes life a lot easier when you need to remove tanks in tight passages.

3) Clip your cookies and arrows to the bungee. It puts them below the chin and above the larger part of your chest, there is a natural void there so when you are playing around in really tight stuff the markers are less likely to get stripped off your gear.

.

I see what you are reading. I've known people to do it the way I was thinking with unsatisfactory results.

I think he meant swap the position of the inflator and dump, that's the way to do it. The dump works much better at the top. Route the inflator hose up the left side and to the center of your chest. Use a short inflator hose on the left reg and add a bungie to keep it in the center or off to the left a little.
Take a piece of plastic tubing, (the same size as your ice maker water line) and punt under the band on the left shoulder strap. Take a piece of #24 line, tie to the dump valve and route through the 3 inch long plastic tube and leave about 2 inches hanging out and attach the dump handle thingy. You use the inflator for adding air and the dump valve for letting air out. With the air coming out at the highest point you can dump air much faster when needed.

thanks I'll give it a try, worst case I switch it back Thought it would be good for stream lining. Thats the fun part of the learning curve it finding out what works for you

Thanks

On the same topic, I'm currently using LP 80's. Now after 30+ dives in the Nomad, I'm ready for more volume. Has anyone used HP 120's for sidemount. I want to stay with the 7.25 inch diameter, so I am limited to cylinder choices. At DEMA I looked at the Faber HP 120 and compaired it with the Worthington HP 120. Any comments????? Ken

I've been using HP130 worthington's for about a year now, no complaints.
Plenty of lift for twin 130's, 2 80cf stages, and one 40cf O2. Not to mention the 5# Salvo 35W HID canister.

Yes - their bloody heavy getting them to the water...I would rather use my LP85 and a stage OR TWO before LP120's

But that's jst me. I think Kelly uses them and I know John Kunkle uses them.

With the fills I like to see, my 85's are 120's

And what do you think I fill 120's to? It ain't 2640. If I'm going to haul those heavy-ass tanks to the water, may as well make it worth it. Their going to get a hydro at the same time.

I've only been sidemounting for a couple of months, but I think switching the LP hose and the OP valve improves the operation of the rig. If you bungie the LP hose to your left strap, it stay in good position to always find. And if you extend the pull line and tuck it in along the shoulder strap, it's also very easy to find. I haven't dived a sidemount rig with the hose and valve in the original positions, but I think it wouldn't be as smooth.

If you look at my inflator in this pic, you'll see that I run the hose straight up and loop it back down into the inflator. Works well for me, and doesn't pull or catch when supermanning a tank. BTW the tanks are hp 130's.

i tried the same thing and noticed that in some positios the inflator at the bottom of the wing did not always dump as well as I woud like but definately like the clean look. I am planning to dive SM in Mexico and plan on trying the original inflator over the shoulder and inflator at the bottom of the wing to see which i like best. Good luck. Hope this helps.

I switched mine for about 50 dive but now it’s back to the way it came.
The worst that could happen is a total loss of bouncy, I had two of them that’s why I changed it back. The problem is that the spring on the dump valve isn’t strong enough and the valve can catch open. Earlier this year at the CDS conference I heard of a way to fix that “add another spring” so I’ve been thinking about switching it back but now that I have a dillo I doubt it.

That's interesting, I wish we could talk in person to get a little bit better description of how it happened. I have hundreds of dives on my Armidillo and never had this happen. The only bouyancy issue I had [and it was ugly] was the corrougated hose came completely off of the elbow...and I was diving wet. It was an interesting exit.

Hello,
A real newbie here! I'm getting into sidemounting for orthopedic reasons, and am just waiting for my Trans Pac to Nomad parts to come in.
If I swap the OP valve for the inflator hose, what happens when I am on the surface. Since the OP valve is now at the highest part of the bladder, wouldn't it open up causing me to loose buoyancy? Also, how can you quick dump if the LPI comes from the bottom?
Like I said, I'm a newbie!
Thanks,
George

No, the OP valve is nowhere near as sensitive as a drysuit's exhaust valve. The bladder has to be REALLY full for it to open.

You're absolutely right. I tried it out and it works just fine. Just goes to show you can never stop learning!
Thanks,
George
