I was thinking about putting a decorative flag on a house and my thoughts drifted to "what not a cave diver flag". Maybe a dive flag with a cave arrow in the center. But does no such flag exist? Does anyone know where such a flag could be bought or how one goes about making such a flag (perhaps with extras to sell or donate)?

I've been considering making a "cave diver" or "tech diver" flag too. I thought about making a flag that is the same design as the regular dive flag but with a black field instead of red. Same color scheme as a pirate flag. Can you dig it? 8)

Damn Good Idea,
infact I've altered my avatar although I've used the English Dive Flag as a starting point.

Take Alan's idea and superimpose a scootering diver in doubles and you would have an awesome flag. Where is Cris? Any other artists out there?

What do you need? I can make them as decals but I have no way to make a flag out of material.

Come up with a design and there are several places that will sew the flags or embroider patches.

Okay I was really bored sitting here waiting for Tami & Keith to pick me up to drive the 22 hours to Cave Country, so here is my first draft entry in the cave diver flag competition!

After logging in, go to pictures, and use the upload picture option. To get the link to it, click on it after uploading it, and then copy/paste the url (the link address) into a post you might make referring to it. To include the picture instead of the link, on your post, right click on the thumbnail or a bigger version of the uploaded picture, then properties, then copy/paste the Address/url listed in the properties... You can practice the posting by using the Fill Station section. You can edit your post there until you have it figured out, and even delete your own threads.

Or... email the picture to one of the moderators, webmaster or me tj@dayo.com .

OK. I'm going to have a flag made. Liked the black/white with yellow arrow.

Other suggestions? If I can make cheaply and you like it, perhaps we can get standardized and / or even sell for the cave diver's forum future expenses.

I made up some designs and sent them to tj but I haven't heard back from him yet. But I did put some up in the pictures area if anyone would like to look and see what you think.

I've had a cave diver's tag on my van for several years, like the red one, TJ posted earlier. I taped the diagonal stripe and painted the tag red. Placed a line arrow over the center and oversized it a bit and painted it a contrasting color. Added the gold ( yellow ) line and vola! We had some hats with the design made up and some T-shirts as well. The T-shirts were at Vortex Springs for sale. Don't if they are still around or not. My dive card also uses the design as a background.
Thanks,

I just uploaded a quick scan of my business card to the pictures section. This is a realy nice design for tags, cards or flags and various clothing options. I have no idea who the originator is but they deserve a pat on the back, for a cool cave diving design.
Thanks,

Glad you guys liked it, I have it pointing left which is good because I see Bill Renneker has a design with the line and arrow similarly which points right.

If you're going to make them up, shoot me a msg. and i'll go in with you!

We might need these for diving jackson blue, I hear the Sheriff's dept. keeps asking divers if they're using a flag.... even within the fenced area...

I've never been asked if I was using a flag at JB.... of course towing one inside the cave could get kinda interesting.....

For Hole and Twin you should display one on the boat; that is appropriate under state law any time you have divers in the water on a navigable waterway.

This is the first I've ever heard about a diver's flag at JB and I've been diving it for years. I too, use one at all other sites, in the millpond and me and my youngest son were checked at Twin 4 or 5 years ago, by a game warden. Nice guy, once we showed him our flag and told him we would tow it over the cave with us, when we went out.
Thanks,

So has anyone gotten either one of these made? I'm putting together some stuff with a cave diver flag on it and there's a heated poll on Wiscuba about which color scheme to use: Black/White or Red/White. Which do you prefer?

A dive flag is a safety item to avoid having divers run over by boats. This isn't an issue for cave diving. A cave diving FLAG would be to make a statement. If you want to make a statement, make it bold, make it black!

Which design has been copyrighted and for what reason?

more importantly, when?

and which version?

Thanks Bill.

Bills reply:

I believe the red dive flag with the yellow line and blue arrow. Why copywrite, $$$$$$. It is my understanding that it was copywritten earlier this year. If you have any questions, please email divehype@aol.com and he should be able to answer your question.

My thoughts!

A Cave Diving flag, is an oxymoron, a contradiction, a "what the fark would a cave diver need a flag for???" statement. Yep, my vote is black. Fits the mythos quite well, I think.

After Bill's statement, I guess that settles it, black it is. Being that it's been posted on here last year in December already, unless someone can prove otherwise, a copyright on Black (wait a minute, TJ posted it in Red, with yellow and Blue, isn't he the rightful owner?) or red won't hold any water in court. Copyrights go into effect at the moment of the creation of the design (http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-general.html#protect), not when it's registered. Anyone can copyright anything by putting it in an envelope and mailing it to themselves to prove date. Posting in a public forum works too!

I am wondering if it would still look good with a white line instead of a yellow line... then you could daydream about being back in some quiet, unused portion of the cave ; )

It may not work out well with the white background stripe..

Alan Garrett

When I was originally playing around with the idea of a white stripe over a black field design, I also thought about making the stripe out of that silvery reflective material that you see on the back of safety vests and reflective road signs. More visible, but like someone else said earlier, that doesn't matter too much. I just thought the highly-reflective diagonal stripe would look muy cool on a license plate or a sticker. What'cha think? :?: -Alan

Well I wrote this guy, haven't heard from him about his 'copyright'.

Considering the dive flag is uncopyrightable and Forrest designed the line arrow, I don't think a cave diving flag is anything new or copyrightable in the first place, so good luck enforcing it, whoever you are. And if it was here first, that's an awful underhanded manuever. If we were first to design it on CDF, my vote is profit from copyright goes in trust to NSS-CDS for the acquisition/land maintenance fund.

If anyone is interested i've got some hats and patches with this new flag design being made up in an oval design. I'll have pictures and price up on here soon if anyone wants one. Let me know if you'd like a hat personalized with your organization, etc. our embroiderer is really accomodating.

Heck, I like the look of that. It reminds me a little of the design for my dive club's logo. I'll try to post a picture of it too. When you get an idea of the price on the hats and stuff, let us know. I'm definitely interested. It would be nice to have something so cool that was designed by some of the CDF's own misguided children! -Alan

I just submitted a picture of my club's logo as it appears on my card. It is in the photo gallery and is entitled "Liquid Space Divers Card" For some reason I just can't seem to attach it to my posts. Sorry. But I have often toyed around with making the field black instead of red, but since I'm the only cave diver in the group I figured I had better leave it alone. Check it out if you like. -Alan

Colors generate emotions....here`s whats involved..:
Black is the color of night, fear, death, drama, classic & serious.
Red is blood, life, combat, determination to act, speed, violence, skin & sex.
Blue is liquid, ocean, rain, all water, sky, horizon, research & discovery, science, space & travel.
Yellow is sun, joy, friendship, wealth, flowers & party
White is actually all colors but stands for, life, cleanliness, purity & simplicity.

I can thus understand why most cave divers would be attracted to black but the blue would be more friendly to common people.
Also why stick to the square shape? Why not simply a line arrow shaped flag......
