I guess I'm spoiled. I love to cave dive and I live in High Springs with so much great diving in my backyard. But now I have some really hard to turn down job offers in other places. What do you guys think of Boca, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee?

I'm stuck in Georgia indefinitely, but when my current situation is over, I'm outta here. I've done some studying on it, and it seems like it'll be Tallahassee.

It is my goal to move to Marianna Florida and have a second home in Akumal!

I live in Gainesville, but if I had to choose between the three I would go for Tallahassee. It seems like most of the caves are S of I-10 and W of I-75. I think you can get to just about every cave in N fl faster from Tallahassee than Jacksonville... I think the drive to Peacock is about the same from Tallahassee or Gainesville, and you are WAY closer to Marianna.

...as for Boca, I'd only move there if I was aching for a beach for some reason. Plus, I'd bet cost of living is a lot less in the Panhandle than Boca.

Mrs Wizard doesn't do sand. If she did, I would already be in High Springs or Ft White.

Tallahassee is certainly close enough to caves. I love Jackson Blue. But, you guys that live in Tallahassee, do you like it there? How do your non-cave diving significant others feel about it?

Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA

Like anywhere else it has its pluses and minuses. JB is an hour and 10 minutes, Madison is an hour and 20. Luraville is about the same as Madison. Ginnie is 2 hours 10 minutes. Gulf coast is 45 minutes, Panama City is an hour and a half, Pensacola is 3.

Property costs are fairly cheap, you won't confuse it for an urban area if you're coming from Jacksonville, Miami, or Tampa, but it's not the middle of the woods either.

Overall it's fairly ideal for cave divers.

Back when land was really cheap I managed to snag 5 acres less than a mile from Little River. I can think of a lot of worse places to retire then a little 5 acre homestead centrally located in Cave Country.
Unless you love urban sprawl, traffic jams, high insurance, high crime, and the company of around 5 million cranky New Yorkers still pining about how great it is from whence they came, I wouldn't even consider South Florida as an option. This place is getting ruined on the fast track.
Not that it affects me because I don't water my lawn but from Orlando to Key West is now on once per week water restrictions. We're running out of water yet they keep allowing more growth. If this wasn't my home town and I didn't have such deep roots here I would have already escaped.
Okay...I'm rambling but the point is stay out of SoFla and Boca (Mouth of the Rat) Raton. It ain't happened yet but you don't want to be here when the poop finally hits the propeller.
I give it 10 years.

What are you, an optimist???

That's why I left Lauderdale 4 years ago. I only wish I would have left 10 years ago!

To be clear.....I mean't at the rate we are going, I'll give it 10 years before where I live now (Stuart/Jensen Beach) becomes the same overpopulated crime infested cess pool that almost everything from Palm Beach County south has become. But then again some people would call all that "progress". I call it a travesty but to each their own I suppose. :-(

The barbarians are at our gates!

I like our 15 acre hide-out in the woods near Micanopy. The only thing missing on our property is a swimming hole. I have considered digging and dynamite but for now I'm happy for a short drive to my pick of fresh water dive sites.
Bradenton is my home town and I have family over in Palm Beach County. Nice to visit -- as they say -- but way too crowded for me to live....

great responses guys. Thanks

What do you think of Tallahasse from a non-cave diving perspective?
Anybody out there that used to live there and wouldn't go back?
Anybody out there that loves it?

Coming from High Springs, Tallahassee shouldn't be too bad. It is a larger city and you'll find more to do. I moved from an area of over half million population to Marianna a few months ago and it's definitely been a shock. I think even a move to Tallahassee would have been a shock. It's the mentallity of many of the people in the smaller areas (speaking mainly of employers/co-workers). But I love being 10 minutes from great cave diving. So that makes it all worth it. When I'm at work and I'm faced with some of the narrow thinking you can encounter in smaller areas, I just think about the diving. As for non-diving family, my wife also cave dives, so I couldn't answer that!
