View Full Version : Cellphone Service in Cave Country
Personally I have used my ATT Wireless TDMA service in cave country with good service.
Well now I am being "forced" to switch to a GSM plan for work....
Has ANYONE had 'decent' service while standing in the parking lot of Cow using any GSM service? :?

Can't speak for the reception at Cow but my ATT/GSM service went from a 50/50 shot at best with an external antenna on my van here to now I can (usually) make calls from inside the shop here at Dive Outpost with no external antenna. Happened overnight about 6 weeks ago...no explaination for it.

I use Alltel cellular and I get pretty bad reception all over cave country. I just don't get a signal - if I am lucky I get an analog connection that sounds terrible.

I can't discuss reception at Cow, but I have Cingular GSM service and get reception at Rennaker's at Peacock, and various other spots I wouldn't have expected it. Cingular and AT&T Wireless "merged" this year, so I would think you should expect about the same results. I have
a Motorola T720 with the standard 1/2" external antenna.

I get Nextel (1 bar) in Peacock one parking, don't know about Cow. Never looked at my phone while I was there. There are bunch of dead spots.
Recommend getting an external antenna since most phones are so low powered. After the new year, I'll be adding an external antenna to the Tacoma and Trailblazer.

T-Mobile worked well at Peacock last spring for me. It was useless at Ginnie, but a mile from the gate it had good signal.
Go figure.
I've been happy enough with T-Mobile - it has a nice price-point and also can be had with wireless "all you can eat" data service for very little additional money. The latter is not fast, but it DOES work - even in a moving car.

Sprint - no signal pretty much anywhere in cave country more than a mile or so off I-75. Oh well, i have other things to attend to while i am there, phone calls arent usually my main concern ;)

Most of the time, I turn my phone off unless I'm waiting for my dive buds to arrive.
Good GSM service at Peacock, River Rendezvous, and Ginnie.

That's surprising. I use Alltel (new motorola phone up in Cleveland) and have made several calls from Telford, Peacock and Cow, even from Waterhole. :?:
