View Full Version : Florida state capitol
I've read that the capitol building in Tallahassee has no sixth floor, the way many buildings have no thirteenth. I've searched everywhere I can think of, but can't find any "reason" for this.
I know many of you live in the Tallahassee area. Can you shed some light?

I have no idea why, but anyone who drives west on Appalachee Parkway (27 West) towards the city will know why its the best capitol building ever built...

Too bad that picture isn't actually real.
I'm glad I didn't rent space on that floor.
I bought a swamp instead. :-D

That's a huge...Johnson get back to work!!
How about a little more state capital history. when the contractors were driving pilings for the foundation they would go so far then the ground just swallowed them up. this happend a few times, then in some of the holes that were made cement trucks came in and poured concrete for months. I dont knwo how many thousands of yards of concrete where poured, but it was a lot. I wounder what that was under the capital?

It could have mezzaneen floors I know when I work in the duval county jail there were acually twelve floors but only used six of them to house inmates. The other floors were for acand other utilities. Who knows.

Call and ask them.
Okay, I did.
It turns out the capitol building DOES have a sixth floor. But it isn't accessible to the public because it is all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC. There is no "Sixth Floor" button in the passenger elevator because the public has no reason to go there. If you use the stairwell, the door to the floor is locked.
I wondered, I asked, now I know.

You can get to the sixth floor by permit only. A lot of things around Tallahassee are like that.
I can't believe OFG-1 missed that one! :-D

Well, I didn't miss it, it was just too easy. Little things like:
Considering what your legeslature does, it is shaped correctly.
Considering who pays for it, its shaped correctly.
Considering how much they think about your tax dollars, its shaped correctly.
The designer had a good laugh. I'll bet his renderings did NOT look like this.
The contractor probably kept the shape in mind during construction.
Anyhow, Washington DC has the Washington monument, Paris has the Eiffel tower, London has the clock tower, why shouldn't Florida have a huge phallic symbol of their own.
ps - When you think about property tax reform in Florida, just think of this picture. What do the letters F.O. mean to you?
