Planned a dive in Eagles Nest. We wanted to go downsteam to the Room of Dreams, Planned gases, 100% deco, decided on a 32% Travel gas which would take us from surface to the bottom of the shaft at 125' there we would clip of stage and swim downstream on a back gas of 15/55 which gave us a END of around 140' and a PO2 of 1.4 @ 265'.
The vis was around 30' with particles in the water. After entering the water dropping 100% on log and dropping through throat and down to the top of the debris pile, there we unclipped the 32% and switched to back gas.
We swam following the downstream marker and dropped through "the pit" maxing out at 287' we took the right fork leaving a line maker for our exit at just before the 800' mark, a line joined from the left and a lot of loose line was on the floor around where the line came in. At this point the main line was in the ceiling.
We swam up to a ledge and found the 800' maker. At that point we decided to start our exit. Everything went well on exit and we started our first micro bubble stop at 185' then on to the second at 140' just after the stop we swam up and over the crest of the debris pile and collected our 32% and started acending the line. Everything went very smoothly.
Just as our 30' stops were finishing we slowly "flew the curve" on our VR3's to our O2 tanks and started a switch. I took a breath of my O2 and right away started choking I had burning in the back of my throat and chest, my eyes were watering and I could hardly breath in. I switched back to my 32% to reconsider my options and to figure what had happened. I did not understand I analyzed the gas after filling and confirmed it was 100%. My guess was I had somthing in the reg so I treid again taking a small breath I sucked only to begin the choking again.
This time I switched back 32% and decided I needed to run deco with the 100% failure listed on my VR3. My stops jumped from 30mins to 75mins. I had enough gas and was not in any serious danger. The problem was I was continuing to cough badly and was a concerned of getting bend. I was also starting to get cold and my chest and throat was hurting a lot.
As my partner finished his deco he switched tanks with me and I was able to breath his 100%. On switching the VR3 back my stop time dropped to 22mins. I waited for both the VR3's to clear and then I exited the water. I had foam coming out my nose and mouth and had trouble breathing.
I sat down breathing O2 just in case and my partner collected all our gear so we could head out.
The out come was my tank had got contaminated with clorine in it, I am not sure where it come from or how it got there. It had never been left empty and I had used it for several dives proir to this one.
The lesson I came away with (which my instuctor had told me to do anyway but failed) Is to breath every reg on every tank before entering the water.
One week later and on a strong course of anti biotics I am left with a cough, shortness of breath and burns to lungs throat nose ears and glands.
I hope a few weeks will see me diving fit again.
