I have it on "pretty good" authority Little River is opening for diving tomorrow (12/03/04). Please take this with a grain of salt and check for yourselves but it is a pretty solid tip.
Great news, thanks Mike :)

I stopped by for a look on tues or wed and the porta potties were being placed back there now that they won't float off and the guy told me that it would be open this weekend.

Just leaves more of upper Little River for me! I've taken 2-3 dives there and still havn't seen it all. I imagine there is only more in lower Little River. Heading out the weekend of the 17th. You got plans?
Angie
There's no upper section to LR....I don't know what you're talking about...nuh-uh....nothing to see here, folks...look elsewhere! :-D
Unfortunately, I'm working that week...through the 18th. I already have a dive planned at Eagles Nest on the 19th(Sunday). How long are you going to be up there?

Planning to check out the tightest, siltest, nastiest holes I can find. After a flood there will definitely be percolation and zero vis. Sidemount stuff only! 8) Leaving morning of the 19th. Oh well..........

At Little River, just as you go in on the left, at about 20' depth there are 2 branches that either should qualify. ;)

Hah - If you head into that passage take small tanks and expect a low vis exit!

Actually I don't recomend the left branch at all. The right branch is nasty. The left branch was frightening - almost as bad as when I half burried myself at the bottom of the sandslide.
Low viz exit is an understatement in sections of that passage. Have fun and don't worry about a backup mask:)

I found a 'silt monster' in one of those passages. You know - when the floor moves from just the pressure wave created by your forward movement. I turned - oh so carefully - and beat a hasty retreat. The 'silt monster' at Ruth was bad enough and there is plenty of room to stay off the floor there. I don't know where your sandslide was but I've heard of one at Little River to watch out for. If it's the same one, yup, that would be frightening.

Same one.
If you've been in the 20' passage I take it you've also then done the room above where the main line starts and probably the worm hole circuit that starts and ends at 60' - since they are mostly backmountable.
Someone has done quite a good job lining all the sidemount stuff on the right side of the main line between Table Rock and Merry-Go-Round. Not nearly as scary or nasty as the 20' passage though - just deeper. ;-)

Ah yes, the Sand Slide. I've never been to the bottom. Every time I try, the little cascades of shells rolling down beside me seem to say " you can dig all you want, you'll run out of gas before we run out of sand". I always beat a retreat. The deeper sidemount stuff is very neat. - John

I'd say you have good judgement not to push that passage ; )
Here is the dive report from his extravaganza:

I'm pretty sure it would be less bad comming at it from the bottom side. Never had the urge to go back and test that theory though after I proved the circuit. ;-)

Umm......not interested in being buried alive. Too many years in the funeral business. The Sand Slide can wait for someone braver (?). I saw John head down that hill once to scout it out. I thought about how best to leverage and pull him out by his feet before his return. Didn't need to do it - whew - though I was about to go hunt for him. He took one minute too long. I saw the look on his face on the way out. That was enough for me.

I have spent quite some time trying to find the bottom side. Angie shared your info with me and now I understand why it remained hidden! It should stay that way. Not a place for most people, including me. - John

You got the map I sent then? I hoped it'd go your way if you were interested. The passage in that direction isn't too small (backmountable even) but I'd rather see the vent from either end then go through the slide again.
There are also 2 cracks on the right side of the main line at 60' that lead down to some other scary sand vents (I think 95's are to wide to fit there but 7.25" or thinner work). The cork screw passage and drop off is only the beginning - water is coming up through cracks on every side of that section of passage making it seem more like a natural land bridge then a solid chunk of rock.

Mind sending the map my way? I'd like to check that area out. Thanks! Aviatrr@aol.com

I'm going to take a look at it from the other end. Thanks for the info. It's REALLY good to know that it connects (a dire if I don't take this burrowing exit I will die situation) and I so very appreciate the fact that you did it! However, my curiousity has been satisfied. I would have to bang around quite a bit to test the stability of that sand vent before going as far you did. Especially after the floods. :)
