It's owned by the state and is governed by the same rules as all State Parks, no solo diving.

I dove there yesterday. Flow was quite high. Viz was good in the main tunnel, but cloudy in the tunnel leading to Martz Sink.
They were enforcing a no scooter rule. I didn't realize that before going, so this was a bit of a disappointment. The gentleman working there said it was a rule put in place by the state in response to supposed environmental concerns.

I hope this new "no scooter" knee jerk reaction doesn't spread to every state park.

They need to make fragile areas of cave off limits to teaching. Thats where most of the damage happens.
IMO, in large passages scooters have less impact than swimmers, especially in high flow systems. Too many divers do not make the effort to stay in good enough condition to swim against the flow and never learn to read the cave. The windup is divers bulldozing their way through passages breaking and bashing into everything in sight. Remember the "Corn Flakes"? They are more like "Rice Crispies" now.

Talk about a giant step backwards Perhaps I should dig up my old 8-track too. Never know.......might need it. I don't own a scooter so I'm no expert but this decision doesn't make much sense to me from the outside looking in. I'm sorry to see a no scooter rule in place for JB.

Hey Angie, no problem just did not want the scooter prohibition idea to extend to jackson...it's kinda a necesity in that system and its comparatively easy to scooter there as well. Bill

A scooter is a necessity in Madison if you plan on going to the far reaches of the Courtyard. Otherwise, you're looking at a double stage(single if you go in at Martz) - if your SAC rate is good - to get to EOL without any time to poke around. If the flow is up, fuggedaboutit... And Madison is extremely easy to scooter through...as long as you're not trying it in the Rocky Horror area.
I'll take your word on JB...haven't been there yet. It's on my to do list...just haven't made it up there yet. I need to go up and spend 3-4 days there just diving the caves in the pond.

You definitely should Mike, I can't wait to get back to JB, and Madison for that matter... too many caves, too little time!

If you have the 3-4 days it's well worth the trip. Stop by Cave Adventurers. http://caveadventurers.com/. Check out the pontoon boat/sherpa/refreshments that is offered for the pond.

JB is a fantastic cave to scooter in. Actually it's a pretty fantastic cave period. You could easily spend a week just exploring the far reaches of the cavern alone. Hope to see you up this way one day. Definitely go by Edd's for all of your hook ups.
