I need some info on the usual fee for a hydro on a Genesis 100 steel tank. In your area, does the operator/dealer have a set fee for hydro,v.i.p.and fill. Also has anyone heard of a "pre-test" on a galvanized steel tank being done before the hydro can be done. Thanks in advance for your help. Chuck <><

Hydro costs the same for steel as it does for alum. VIP is a bit cheaper for steel though.

Hydro, vip and fill here is $30 for alum and $27 for steel.

It will depend on where you take it as well as the relationship you have with your LDS. The guy I use in northern KY offers the hydro, inspection, and a fill for a set price. He does not do O2 cleaning though and since he knows that I am PSI certified, he only charges me for the hydro (he does a quick look inspection when they come back, but leaves them for me to clean and inspect myself.)

the standard price here is $25.00, which is hydro, vip, and fill....al or steel makes no difference. O2 cleaning adds another $10.00 (which includes sonic cleaning of valve and compatible o-rings).

I get hydros for about $23, I do my own VIPS. The "pre test" is probably for a PST tank, where there is a pre-pressurization of the tank before the hydro itself is actually done. If the Hydro operator doesn't do that on those tanks, they are likely to fail hydro.

Please tell me more about the additional step required for PST tanks....is this a well known process by most hydro facilities? We are documentation of the process be found? Why is it diffrent on PST tanks compaired to other steel tanks?

For the longest time people used to hyperpressure their steel tanks with air before taking them to hydro to ensure they'd pass hydro.

As a sidenote I know that Wakulla Dive Center is setting up to be a hydro facility, which may save on cost and, more importantly, turnaround time.

I took my twin 104's to a hydro facility in Pensacola for their first hydro. One tank failed with no explanation from the hydro facility. I questioned Press Steel and they told me the hydro guy more than likely screwed up. When I called the tester he had never heard of the pre-test and told me that was a myth. Needless to say I am the one who got it in the end....owww.

We have sold lots of the PST tanks and the first batch that we took to hydro we got burned. Several of the little 80s failed because, even after I gave them PSTs hydro procedure, they would not do the procedure because it wasn't "standard practice." I had to eat two tanks. The bottom line is this - if the PST tanks are not prestretched - they will likely fail. Hydro stations that perform a lot of hydros on steel tanks are normally familiar with the procedure, but make sure. The hydro station owner had a a problem with the procedure, and he had a point, that if the tanks would not pass hydro without the "check for leaks" test, then something is wrong with the tanks. He did however agree to their procedure, and we have not had any fail since.
