I have a JVC DVM90 video camera I got cheap with the intention of shooting some sump trips. It's nice and small, but the JVC housing does not have an external mic on it.

Does anyone know where/how I might go about installing one on the housing? It only needs to be able to withstand 20-30 ft of submersion.

Most UW housings don't have external mics. You might find a UW mic made for pools, etc, that may stand sump depth. You will have to find or make a gland to get the wire through the housing. Here is a picture of a "Court Smith" homemade gland. That is just an o-ring mashed between 2 peices of plexiglass.

I'll look in my electronic parts box, and I believe I have a microphone that I clipped off of a camera. (non water proof) I also have a pile of flat transducers, but I'm not sure what voltage they put out. You're more than welcome to what I have. PM me your address, and I'll mail you a couple things.

My L&M video housing has an external mic. I'm checking with a couple of manufacturers like Gates to see if I can get just the mic, and how much they want to charge me for it. If they're outrageous I may take you up on the parts offer there.

I'm thinking mainly about out of water audio use, but it still needs to be watertight because of the environment.

I found an interesting link on how to build a hydrophone out of an electronic greeting card transducer.

http://sonar-fs.lboro.ac.uk/uag/products/products_hydrophone.html

They even have a circuit diagram for a pre-amplifier.
