Unless things have changed recently, it is my understanding that sidemounting is not considered within the realm of limited possibilities accepted by DIR.

What makes something DIR, again? I must've been out sick that day

it has to be simple and pretentious at the same time.......

From what I understand, they use the backplate, without the tanks, and just hang sidemount bottles like they hang stage bottles.

It is simple, but there is the problem of the wings flapping around, because there is nothing to hold them down.

If you mostly backmount, and only occasionly sidemount, I guess it is better than nothing.

P.S. No DIR slamming allowed, remember rule #6.

Actually, Trey has to approve it. Currently, there is no DIR side-mount.

Is this a test?

No slamming on my part. Simple statement of fact.

The wing can be worn under the backplate (although I do know one diver who doesn't wear a wing but uses his drysuit instead*).

Hi what if your dry suit would break under water ??

FWIW I recently had a wing break during a dive and the drysuit acted as backup for the wing. Got me out of the cave........it was sort of a rollercoaster ride buouancy control wise, but I got out okay. Madison Blue where there are wide open tunnels, etc.

The only place ( I personally) could see not worrying much about using a wing would be in very tight cave systems where sidemount is what you need anyway - maybe wings just snag - and/or perhaps very high flow exits that will spit you out no matter what your equipment configuration.

You walk out.

Most UK cave divers when diving dry and sidemount use their suit for bouyancy control and don't wear a BC. If you are in a small passage often your body is against the floor and roof simultaneously an no amount of bouyancy control will change that.
