Hi guys, I am new here and I would like to know if will be any interest in a piece of kit that I have developed.

It is a rechargeable torch based on the Maglite 3 "D" 12 1/2 inches long, with a run time of 40 minutes and with an output of 951 lumens.

I have modified the stock switch and implanted a base and columms to support a ceramic socket for bi-pins super-bulbs.

I have exchanged the plastic reflector for a hevy walled solid parabolic aluminum reflector with Orange Peel texture, replaced the pastic for a Pyrex lens.

I have three differents battery holders for this light, ( to cover different budgets) the power source are nine high capacity high current Nimhs batteries.

Or this plug and charge using a RC charger

The lumen output is almost double than the vaunted Surefire M-6 (The ex-most powerful flashlight in the world)
and as it is rechargeable those lumens are for FREE.

Here are two beamshots with the light coming from 43 yards away (the camera is at 15 yards)

Surefire M-6 (500 lumens)

I didn't know a Maglite was particularly waterproof. How deep is it rated ?

40min burn time...?

That would barely last long enough to go in, let alone round trip... and for that size, I'd expect longer burn times.

The only thing I see that being a possibility for, is being used for "photo lighting", but only if you have a good reflector.

A couple of things that I thought of..

Depth Rating - a mag light probably won't make it very deep.

Size - it's too big for a backup light, and wouldn't really work as a primary light as you can't mount it on your hand for "hands free" lighting.

Burn Time - too short for both backup or a primary.

I like the picture in the kitchen sink.

I think it belongs in the kitchen or next to the bed or couch or more importantly in the bathroom but in a waterfilled cave?

I know nothing about dry caving but it looks like it needs to be marketed there other then here.

maybe you should call ronco, they can sell a million of them.. :)

Over the summer, I was out in my boat camping out all night on an island with a bunch of friends. The next morning I had to take someone back to shore somewhat early.

After I dropped her off at the beach I was getting ready to go back to the island and as I was getting back into the boat I saw something purple under the water (about 3 feet deep) and when I reached down to see what it was, it was a purple 4-cell maglight. It had to have been down there all night, but probably not much longer than that.

Anyway, I pressed the power button and it turned right on and worked great. I was pretty impressed, considering it had been in 3 feet of saltwater all night long. (I still have it BTW)

They still wouldn't work in a cave, but they are at least a little waterproof.

15 years ago I flooded a 3 D-cell maglight in the deep end of a 10' deep swimming pool. That cured all my desires to ever take a maglight underwater again.

as far as the light goes in this thread, the workmanship is beautiful, but the burntime sucks. A 40 minute burntime is just several hours too short.

HI GUYS.
I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY THE MAG INSTRUMENTS COMPANY, THAT I CAN NOT USE THE NAME 'MAG' AS IT IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK.

CONSEQUENTLY THE NAME OF MY LIGHT FROM NOW ON WILL BE THE

BOREALIS

THANK YOU
