Hi, all. Been lurking for a few weeks, first post. I have a like-new Andy's trilaminate drysuit that I got in trade from a guy who trimmed out the seals. I need to have them replaced, but Andy's has a serious backlog, so I was hoping y'all could hook me up with a shop that does the best work.
Thanks,
Scout

I highly recommend :blackbar I personally think he is the best in the business. If I am not mistaken he is the authorized service repair man for DUI on the East coast.

I second that. He recently replaced my neck and wrist seals plus dump valve and did an outstanding job.

Hey! A concensus on an internet forum. How does that happen? Thanks, guys, I'll be contacting :blackbar today.

An endorsement on the CDF, and no moderator pulls it. How does THAT happen?
Maybe this says something about his work.
MK7
Rule #6: No personal opinions or endorsements (negative or positive) about other individuals, cave diving related businesses and organizations.

Oops. First post and I've encouraged others to violate forum rules. I'm assigning myself remedial training.

Ok I will be the 1st to ask why was it against rules? but when someone say's Salvo diving or dive rite is the best, I seen a light smashed on a table and it fired up and all kinds of stuff like that. I asked why it was not a violation of the rules and it was explained to me that it was someones opinion of what they thought about the product. So I said Gamble was the best that is my opinion so why was it against the rules. The guy asked and I gave my opinion so whats the big deal?

do you remember this? And I disagree it is not just and opinion about a bulb suplier cause the guy says my next light is going to be a Salvo. Mind you I do not have anything against Salvo this is just a prime example of what I am saying.

I cracked my 10W bulb in my dive rite during my full cave class last week. "Luckily" there was a spare at Ginnie I could buy at a bargain price of $139.
Then Larry laughed at me and slammed his salvo against the table and fired it up...
Next light willbe a salvo. Plus they ahve the wet connects which are pretty cool...

Now that I think about it, I can kind of understand. I frequent several gun and self-defense related forums, and to varying degrees they all allow info about companies in the biz, but it's a big diverse business and a fairly large community.
As little as I know about cave diving, it seems to be a pretty small community wherein a lot of the participants sell, repair or manufacture gear. It's probably a good opportunity to step on someone's toes to play up one guy while his competitors feel slighted.
Even if I didn't get it, I do understand that it's not my house, not my rules.
I've now read and will comply.
We have the rule to prevent flaming or slamming.
You can mention a company, just don't offer an opinion. A good answer to scout308's question would be to list a couple of vendors, without stating which you think is best.

Or simply state that you have used <name of vendor> and was very happy<or disaitisfied> with the product/service/whatever. I think that is how it was put the last time this came up, am I correct?
DeWayne, I believe the example you are thinking of was, "I am considering using XYZ Dive Shop. If you have experience with them, please PM me with your impressions."
There's nothing wrong with praising or condemning a company in a PM, just not a public post.
There's also nothing wrong with praising a particular product you have used. Rule #6 allows that, but it doesn't allow you to give a general opinion about the company that made the product.
You're also allowed to say you didn't like a particular product, but please tell us what you didn't like about it. Don't just say it was a piece of garbage.
That being said, the first post in this thread should have said, "I need to have a drysuit repaired. If you can recommend a good repair facility, please send me a PM."

Ok then lets try this I have used :blackbar for replacing my seals in my dry suit and he did an awesome job if you would like his website or number PM me and I will give it to you. IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?
No, but if you had sent it as a PM it would have been.

That was the essense of what I wanted to say in that post Russell; if you have had a good or bad experience, relate it without the opinion. I think I will stick to PM's, much easier to word them 8)

OK is this ok DeWayne I had my Wrist and neck seals replaced on my drysuit by Steve Gamble if you need his info PM me and I will give it to you?
Now we can't even mention where and who we buy equipment when asked... :(
Steve Gamble is the ONLY operation that I can remember, maybe its because of the fact that many people have dealt with him and still say his name when a drysuit repair question comes up.
I do not know wether his service is good or bad, so this is not a "personal endorsement".

It isn't an opinion, he didn't even own one to form an opinion.
Give the moderators a break, they are just trying to keep this forum form being opinionated :-)

I have noticed that this forum is extremely opinionated. I think what the moderators are trying to do is to keep this forum from being full of "Did too - Did not" type postings. Gamble is just collateral damage in that fight

Bad choice of words from FW, 'opinionated'.... in my opinion... of course this board is opinionated... that what boards are.
Nevertheless... The classic Rule #6 is the KEY reason this forum is generally civil. The moderators and users do enforce it, when they see it. Thanks to those 'unofficial moderators' that help point out issues.
Gear is open season though. Got an comment about gear? Not a problem. Voice it. Just leave out opinions about the people and organizations that service or make it.

Well the guy asked for a dry suit repair man and I for one do not know any other and if I took food out of anyones mouth from refering him to the one I did then I am the 1st to say I am sorry. I just know when I got mine repaired it was a great job and when I called every LDS in Ga and Fl they all said the same name so what was the big deal are there several in the area that does it? Is that what the big deal is?

My point exactly it wasn't an opinion it was a plug for Salvo and a bashing on dive rite period now rite is rite and wrong is wrong. Like I said I have nothing against D.R. or S&!#O and am not pro either one. I am just saying the post was not deleted but mine was for saying a name and giving an opinion thats all.
Jammer,
Are you going to be in cave country between Christmas and New Years? If so, we need to go diving, and have a talk :-)

Yes I will be. Or if need be I can give you a call just PM me and I will give you a call.
If you stay away from specifically stating an opinion you're probably going to be OK. As it has been stated in the past; it depends upon the wording.
Here's an example of how I might have worded the response:
I brought my dry suit to Steve Gamble and he fixed it in less than a week. You might want to check him out. His web site is:
http://www.gamblescuba.com
You can also send a PM like Dee (litdiver).
Yes, I agree some of the other posts were also borderline with rule #6.
