I'm considering re-spooling my venerable DR primary with Gold Line for use in photo shots, and so am considering the choice of a new Primary reel...

There seems to be a PLETHORA of new ones out as of late; MANY would look well on the pages of Sony Style magazine...

Anyone using one of these new primaries??

I have the Czech reel made by LOLA,I bought it from G"can you say the name?" gear.Beautiful piece of machining and I like the handle compatibility with a tape reel.I will let you know how much i like it once I drag it through some mud.The G....m people were great to deal with BTW

Barry has made a nice modification to his reel. The handle is delrin now. The lola is interesting...Have you ever used that style?

No, never had the "Tape Reel" style...

Since the beginning, I have used the Wilson patterns and now Lamars regulars...don't know about the G****, afraid it would be TOO big of a change...the cupped-in-hand style like Barry's IS appealing...I think LG is making some in this style as well...

I have not used that style other than running tape measures.I like the feel on land but i have not gotten it wet yet... damn ice on some of our caves.I have only used the 'traditional style' previously,I really like the side palm style and will probably get one to try it out as well. The LOLA is very well made !

You can always use a 'Wilson Special'. Put about 1200-1400' ft of line on a used wire spool, and hold it with a scerwdriver through the middle.

Obviously for laying line, not putting it back on the spool.

I bought a reel from Barry and like it a lot so far. One of my class mates had the one with the AL handle and likes mine better. Smoother running and the lock down screw works well providing you don't back it out too far. (ie user error).

Norm if you want to just use it for photo shoots I got an older primary you could load up with gold line and use.

And to think, he used the term "getting greedy" to describe the 750 ft of knotted line I had on a wreck reel

I like the delrin design of Barry's reels too. I find it much smoother when reeling up than my other reel. It's pretty light as well.
