View Full Version : I don't get it
This is the "Fill Station" part of the forum where we (the members that make this site what it is today) can post off topic stuff, right?
I broke no rules, and neither did anyone else...
Locking that thread was seriously uncalled for... really...
I have been a supporter of the site for a long time, but the thread locking behavior as of late has made me wander other sites more often... This is the internet... and the rules have been followed, its the enforcement of said rules that is not working good...
Really... there was no reason to lock the recently locked thread...
Joe Tegg
There are rules about objectible material placed on the forum. I haven't read the thread in question yet... may not now.. don't want to corrupt my innocent brain.. but one or more of the moderators have obviously objected to something about it, or where it was going.
Let's just see if others have a comment on it with a vote.... just for kicks...

It appears there may be either too many moderators with varying opinions of what is appropriate or the moderators need to get together and come to a consensus on the standards. I for one feel the second amendment is very important and don't believe images of LEGALLY owned firearms should be censored. Tegg is right The Fill Station was created just for the purpose of far flung friends with a common interest in cave diving to have NON-cave diving discussions. CORRECT me if I am Wrong.
So IMHO the lock was a gross abuse of power by a government bent on world domination…… oops wrong thread…… But the lock was off the mark.

I found it offensive. I'm country, and I like my White Dog clear my weapon with a 3-9 scope(I don't like people who waist good ammo) and my pistol with enough barrel to teach someone a lesson without waking the town down the road.
I would sell the pee shooter , get a scatter gun for home protection , and scope a model 70 for long distance disputes :-D and for the love of @&$ strain that hooch

I have a good pump shotgun for home defense right by the bed loaded with good 00.
I have a mosin with a nice scope that is plenty accurate for those that question me from a distance.
The handgun is for people within my "personal space" which is about 25ft around me...
As for straining the hooch, I plan to... it is in "cooking stage" right now...

I thought it was very funny.
As a homebrewer I can appreciate it, I did not sample the hooch at the CE soireé but that is because I prefer filtered stuff (you know, strain the muskrats and other critters that may have fallen into it) :-D
Anyway, as far as the pea shooter, well I have not met many cave divers who don't carry one.... long live our 2nd ammendment!!!
I suppose that is what happens when you let the PC police (a pox on PC!) loose.
Dive safe Joe, and good luck with the poll.

It wasn't about the leaders, it was about the followers. It's not about the subject matter, it was about the level of maturity in dealing with it. The lock down was intended to be a temporary measure until there was a moderator concensus. ALL of the moderators are interested in seeing the voting results. Making it a personal issue is a mistake. There was nothing personal in it. Curt is right. The Fill Station is a gray area intended to Fill a need not otherwise a provided by the other forums. The question is, how far can the Fill Station go and not violate rule #7?

Which is why I wish there were a voting option for "I thought it was hillarious, thoroughly enjoyed it, but thought it might be about to go downhill fast."
While I don't necessarily agree with locking it preemptively, I could see the thread taking a rapid turn for the worse.
Not arguing with the mods here, nor am I siding with them. I thought the thread was great. :-D

See you get it. It was about a thread taking a rapid turn for the worse. Yes it was a preemptive strike but I didn't completely miss the target either. I'll readily admit to being a gun & hooch lover. I just don't think the two need to mix sometimes. Especially at parties.
Luckily the majority agree it didn't need to be locked... either way, I guess I'll just keep the guns and hooch at the non political parties thrown by cavediving gas dealers...
BTW, since I started this thread, you may want to lock it as a "preemptive strike"...

I personally thought the thread was a load of crap that had absolutely nothing to do with cave diving, but then again, I thought that was the whole reason for having the fill station. While I gained no enjoyment from the thread, I am sure there were some who might and therefore it should not have been locked. Loosen up a bit Ang, I got the feeling that you locked it out of spite, that perhaps you felt your authority had been challenged (this is just my opinion mind you based upon what I read.)

I would have figured as much Angie, but still, the way you came in and threatened to close it then a few posts later did just that. I honestly saw nothing in those in between posts other than a bit of a challenge, or what might have been perceived as such. If I could misread it then I am sure others might have done the same. There have been quite a few threads in the fill station that I personally saw no merit in, but just as with my TV, I always had the option of turning it off (not reading them.) I understood the fill station to be a place for just such threads. Just because I find something offensive or nauseating does not necessarilty make it so for everyone. I think your efforts would have been received much better had you just closed it down rather than issuing the challenge. Sorry if I am totally wrong here, but that is just the way I read this whole mess.

Yah I suppose. But I often try to get people to moderate themselves using humor wrapped around a quick warning. I tried it on that thread but online humor sometimes falls flat, so a decision had to be made. Looks like we did have something to talk about though given the current vote results.
When does it become offensive? When the majority says so? Hmmm. I guess that's my job. To make judgement calls on issues that have no clear cut side for right or wrong. 8)

I didn't see an option that I felt adequately described "I enjoyed the thread but don't hold a firm opinion as to whether or not it should have been locked." I guess, in that sense, my previous post was a bit pointless. I just wanted to attempt to make the point that a lack of votes in your favor didn't necessarily imply votes against you.

Agreed. When the weapons became involved it ceased being funny to me, because personal protection is a serious matter. The first time someone knows you are carrying is either the last time, or means you screwed up per the terms of the permit.
A little less chest beating and a little more cave diving please.

I think for a more normal post that might have worked fine. With this thread it was more like trying to put out a fire with gas. We have a great forum here and the moderators have a tough job of maintaining its integrity. Believe me when I say that I am glad its you and not me that has to make those decisions. You will never be able to make everyone happy so you just have to do what you feel is right and hope that it works out for the best. I have heard many complain about the over abundnace of moderation that takes place here, but I think that is what adds to the integrity of the forum (again, my opinion.) The name says it all, it is a cave divers forum so we should strive to stay as close to that ideal as possible without needing the moderators to guide us there.

As far as the TV stations, well what can I say. Anything for a rating, and most journalists have no idea what personal liberty means(edit: add responsibility too). I'm sure it won't be long until the St. Pete Prada, err, Times follows suite.
I just would prefer such things be discussed privately, and with subtlety and discression. About like you feel about diving Falmouth Tegg (which I think we can agree on). The less said the better.

Hey Angie.....looks like to me the vote is actually in the favor of those who liked it....if you take into account that the opinion poll is split into different variations of "for" and "against"....looks like the folks who liked it agree with a landslide. ( 42 votes "for"....29 Votes "against" )
I for one enjoyed it...it was funny....yes it had guns and hooch...big deal !!....we're all big boys and girls here...The Fill Station is a place to let loose a little...that's why it was created....Like Dr. Dewayne said...it's kinda like a TV....change the channel if you don't like what you see....but don't unplug the TV for the rest of us that were in the middle of the show.
As far as giving others the wrong impression about cave divers from this thread....please....if some people can't understand a lil fun and sillyness...they need to get a life.

I am with Tegg on this one. I am new to CDF and thought that thread was hilarious. I am a firm believer in not only the second amendment, but the first one as well. If you didnt like the thread, you could have just went to another one. Why censor the people, censor yourself.
As moderators, we have an obligation to read all the posts, whether the subject is interesting or not. We are expected to act when we see something that is out of line.
It is up to our judgment to determine what "might" offend others. In general, humor that is pedestrian or sophomoric stays, but if it serves absolutely no purpose other than to rile others, it goes. True, the Fill Station should be more lax, but that doesn't mean anything goes. A rule of thumb might be, "Would I want my grandmother reading this?"

If this is the way things are, I'm Highly offended by the next person that posts a photo of thier SS DPV. Since I can't afford one I don't think I should be subjected to the images of someone else enjoying one.

I just re-read the original thread again and cast my vote. Maybe the thread was a little strange, maybe not, but, I did not see anything that justified the lock down or would be objectionable to me or my family.
Forum History!
When we created this forum it was intended to provide the following:
"The purpose of the Cave Diver's Forum is to provide a place on the internet for civil discussions of anything cave diving related. This site is not a place to learn how to cavern or cave dive. This site contains plenty of comments, stories, reports, and opinions. Be careful, responsible, and mature, both in your posts and how you use anything you read here."
But we needed some rules to keep the forum running as we intended. We made 7. http://www.cavediver.net/misc2.htm
Then we needed policies to insure 'civil discussions'. http://www.cavediver.net/forumpolicy2.htm
Then we created a Fill Station section for banter and non cave diving related topics.
Fortunately, one of our most important features about this board is that it is very much self moderating. That's what this thread is doing, and it will no doubt have an influence on future 'moderating' issues.
My 2 cents...

I realize that the moderators have to watch these threads because, yes, some get way off subject and go down hill, but just the same the "Fill Station " is for off subject topics where we can get a couple good laughs. Like DeWayne said "you can't please everyone" but sometimes I wonder if the moderators could loosen up a bit and let us have a few good threads?

Tegg is right The Fill Station was created just for the purpose of far flung friends with a common interest in cave diving to have NON-cave diving discussions. CORRECT me if I am Wrong.
So IMHO the lock was a gross abuse of power by a government bent on world domination…… oops wrong thread…… But the lock was off the mark.
