I can understand the desire to have the Left-lower D-ring-clipped SPG bare (as in without Depth Gauge), but what is the reasoning behind the NAKED SPG, ie sans BOOT?

(enjoying the Obsession)
It's from the mistaken notion that you won't be able to tell if you have a leak.
A leak will still come out of the boot. If it doesn't, then the problem is solved!
It's from the same school of thought that says don't use hose stress protectors.

Thanks!
Now THAT was FUNNY!
Never heard of the prohibition on Stress protectors...is there a collection of "Odd Gear setup Myths" anywhere??
Norm
Actually... I don't have the boot on my SPG because of the ease of access to the little O-rings that like to go from time to time.
Try doing a swap of those at the surface of the water with a boot... Much easier with no boot... :)

Now THERE is a reason...500+ dives, and I have never had THAT leak...YET!

You obviously don't dive enough...
Had it happen 2 times to me. It was real nice to swap said o-rings in only 2 mins.

Sliding the boot down takes five to ten seconds.
In addition to protecting the SPG from scratches and whatnot, it protects the spool from excess stress. Maybe that's why I have 737 dives with no spool o-ring failures.

Guess so... of course the fact that it is screwed down properly has no effect on that... I have a feeling that the "stress" you are saving with the boot does as much good as using RO water to wash the sidewalk vs hose water...
Maybe it's because I bang my SPG on the cave walls while swimming along to avoid the need to run a line. I just feel for the "scuff marks"... :-D

So THAT'S why I got lost last time I was in a zero vis exit.....I thought I was following the scuff marks from my tanks.....guess you had been there recently.... :smt064 :-D

Is it possible/safe to use hydraulic glycerine filled pressure gauges instead of brand named diving SPGs? manometer in brass body up to 5000psi cost only $15. It is kinda tempting. Where is the catch? Do i need an adaptor for HP hose, do i need to clean it w.green stuff?
