There is no way I would ever breathe gas someone else mixed for me. No offense to the shops that provide mix. It is my life so therefore I want to make my own brew. I also feel that making your own mix makes you much more knowledgable about using mix gases.

Nothing I've seen so far says she was diving mix. The depth she was at is no problem (in most cases) on air. Or at least, the depth she reached according to the article.

Let's lay off the guessing about what was and wasn't - unless you really know. I think that's what got the moderators involved before and it's a bad road to start down.

Anyway if the rumor mill is correct then it isn't something that is a new threat that needs discussion - and if it's not then it doesn't need to be discussed.

I found out yesterday that I know the Rudy and have met the Judi involved. Nicest people in the world. Breaks my heart to know that anything bad could happen to either of them. :cry:

Double pneumothorax -AGE, MRI looks good as does CAT. Was recompressed on arrival at Shands (6a sched). She was brought to the surface with no heart beat and resuscitated on the dock, She coded twice at Shands the first night the first on departure from the chamber and the second on arrival in ICU (ICU was non-AED resucitation). She has been stable but very critical since then. The Docs are going to start letting her out of the medical coma & paralasis and see what happens. Had she not been in great shape due principaly to the large number of dives every week, she probably would never have restarted the first time.
If you pray this would be a good time to practice, another angel or two on her side wouldn't hurt.

I can understand your thoughts on this. However many shops mix gas, many divers dive it safely. The trick to ensure your safety is to verify the contents of your tanks.

When I verify a mix I use an Oxygen analyzer, Helium analyzer, and I do a "sniff test" on the gas.

I have NO COMMENT or OPINION regarding the accident other than deep sympathy for the woman and the knowledge that an accident can happen to anyone. I have no knowledge as to what happened in this case.

However, regarding Jim's comment -- I could not agree more. Always test your own gas. Do a 'sniff test'. It only takes a couple of minutes. Know the gas laws so you know if the numbers 'sound right'. Cave divers value equipment redundancy so what's the difference between that and gas testing?

Judy; is starting to respond to "pain", med term for skin scratching. both arms and both legs. she was fighting the ventilator so the docs reduced the vent to its minimum to allow her to take over breathing, all part of waking up. Her blood pressure is not stable so they are keeping the drugs running to maintain pressure. Well what would you expect with bi-lateral pneumothorax? Every one please keep in mind she is still in deep trouble.

Point of interest from the docs (sic); Had the decision not been made on the bottom to take the risk of an emergency ascent from 100' she would not have gotten this far. Spending any time attempting in water rescue activities would have been unrecoverably fatal, under these circumstances. Repeat, under these circumstances.


Let the praying continue, the docs admitted this was beyond their control.

I hope she has a chance to fully recover from this incident.

If I may ask, what are you referring to when you say "under these circumstances"? Mind sharing what circumstances so that the community can possibly learn more about this type of circumstance?
