I'm rehab-ing an old MLS(??) DR cannister and head...it is the long, double-battery style with the twist-off cannister lid.
What was ORIGINALLY used to fill the gap left in the cannister in order to force the battery contacts into the top-mounted lid without play?

I have never seen one of the doubled up monsters up close, but in my old single the battery rode in a carrier. I would have thought that the setup for the double would be similar, with some sort of carrier to position the battery properly. If I recall correctly, the batteries were actually epoxied into the carrier I had. It looked like it would not have been that difficult to make something similar yourself.

Dear Doc Dee,
the dub batteries DO have a "frame" around them, but there is still about 1/2 - 3/4" gap existing...works just fine upside-down, but sooner or later...

The carrier for the single battery had play in it, but not quite that much. Might try some sort of closed cell foam; something stiff enough to provide the support needed, but yet with some give so as not to interfere with sealing the can. Got any old wetsuits laying around?

There was a molded in "button" in the bottom plate to raise the battery pack in the cylinder. If the plate that you have is missing the "button" it is actually a "storage cap". A storage cap can be modified to a bottom plate. I have epoxied in a plastic "button"....a dimmer switch rotary knob... to a storage cap with good results.
