Camera question-
I was looking at Olympus parts to go with the C-7070 and was confused about something.

Item: WCON-07C
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_product_lobbypage.asp?l=1&p=16&bc=2&product=1152&fl=5&acccategory=5
This lens is described as a wide angle lens for the camera price about $115.00.

Item: PTWC-01
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_accessories.asp?id=1152&ct=35
This is described as a Wide Angle for underwater use but the price is $400.00 WOWWW!

Why the difference? The only one I can see is the flat lens on the PTWC verses the domed lens on the WCON lens.

Is this just fancy marketing???? Anyone? Buler?

Norm, were you at buddy?

Thanks, Andrew

Im not really sure what your question is but, "wide angle" is not just marketing, the view through the lense could be 150 degrees of whats in font of you, much different than a normal lense (witch is more like 90 degrees).
I dont think I would want to use a wide angle under water because you have to be incredible close to an object to get a good picture of it.

Right here, Bro...

Quick gaze at the link(s) tells me that the first is for top-water only, and the second is a (probably poor) knock-off of the Inon UW that fits on 67mm housings...

PLEASE tell me you have an Ike housing, not the OLY...

Ah Grasshopper,

Reduction of Camera-to-Subject actually IS the Grail of UW snapping...

It reduces the cubic water column in between, and particulate count as well...

More light (from closeness) on the subject because the Strobe is closer as well meand smaller f stop so Depth of Field is extended...

Meet me at Ginnie sometime and I will give you the Flower Talk

Hey Norm,
I have not purchased anything at this time.
I was looking at the total package and trying to get an understanding of the difference in the lens and quality.
I will try to hunt down Inon, and I have looked at both the Ikelite housing is it worth the extra money?

THanks, Andrew

Inon makes excellent strobes, but I'm looking at Sigma lenses for my Digital Rebel U/W camera setup.

When are you going to be in N FL??

And, YES, IMHO, the Ike is THE way to go...it has SO many more ways to upgrade off-the-shelf...rumor has it that the small $$$ OLY housing(s) were proto'ed only to capture the Asian snorkle-ing Tourist niche...

If all goes as planned I am hoping to return this fall depending on the weather. I will be in town for at least 5 days… finishing apprentice and full cave. Or I might just come into town to dive and see some folks. It is been a long time… and I don't think that they want me to use my sidemount kit for class... :-D

I did purchase an Ikelite case from Forrest- and I plan on converting that with some new glands… Should be a totally fun project! Yep, call me nuts… Hey, why does this gland have a hole in it? Just joking!
What is an- “Inon like Ray E.” Just curious.

Chip, you’re the man… diving a inspiration rebreather, using a digital underwater camera… DUDE! That’s just sounds like the way to go. Sigma makes some great lens… I have used a few in my time.

D1V3R- so what do you shoot?

Later, Andrew

Andrew,

Let me know when you are inbound...I can give you the fill on UW OLY's FTF...

Ray E (I don't remember his last name) is a bro of Chip's whose work I marvel at, and finally met him at the CDF Social...I don't think he has an email addy, but ask Chip...He shoots a OLY-housed 5050 like me, and same strobe...in only a FEW minutes, we shared SEVERAL astounding tricks...good man to chat-up if you have a 5050...

Inon makes an after-market WA adapter that fits OUTBOARD on 67mm filter threads that are used on Housings similar to the IKE and others...Ray has sourced GOOD prices on these BTW...

Andrew ...

Like Norm said, Ray Eccleston uses an Inon lens with his C5050Z (he has an e-mail address). His setup is very similar to Norms and they both take excellent pictures. That's why I asked them both to help out with the underwater pictures at the last Cave Diver's Forum Social (7/2/2005).

Let me know when you're going to be in town. We can snap some pictures with Norm. The Aquatica setup is still a dream for me, because I don't have the money to buy it. The link that I posted shows some excellent pictures taken with Sigma lenses. Now that I think of it, didn't you send me that link some time ago? :)

(Following posted at the risk of Thread Drift)

Sooo...since Andrew is WAY OOT, and Chip and I are much closer, let's set a date based on Andrew's trip for an unofficial "You show me Yours, I show you Mine" (UW Cams ONLY, PLEASE!)" Day at (best bet for good UW viz conditions) Ginnie...unstructured approach, I've got a laptop where apres' dive we can post-process and critique, drifting towards frosty adult beverages as the day wanes...

(PS, I know where we can get some KILLER Babe Cave Divers, who already have experience at Overhead Modeling)

Ok,
Now, I get it.- I was thinking someone had a “Ray E “housing out for sale… I am feeling very blonde at the moment. :smt061

Chip- I had done some research on 35mm cases for deep water use and knew about Aquatica ahead of time- plus a few other divers backed up the gear. My budget is a little on the narrow side for that so I am trying to maximize the results from a pro-sumer package verses a full blown 35mm eSLR.

Besides I never carry my 35mm SLR, it is too big and bulky. Now my girlfriend has a Cannon A40 and it goes everywhere and takes great photos… That’s what I need something that goes everywhere with me. Plus, I can use it underwater

Norm- I like your drift. My drift tend to be mundane and boring but not yours. :smt119

Everyone have a nice weekend.
Andrew
