I'll have to snoop around what passes for an Outfitter here...are they foam filled on the inside like the old Skateboard hats?

What are the options nowadays since the invention of flush toilets and the like?Being too niggard i bought $6 plastic helmet from Home Depot and trimmed it following Bill Rennaker's advise at www.sidemount.com. But you probably only need it while doing solo/scootering. Otherwise i don't see much use of it in u/w cave. For supms with vertical work whitewater kayaking shell probably will work better because you will need some ammortization to absorb possible shock of touching dry cave.

I hope everyone knows that adjective means "miserly."

Ary,

By NOW I would have thought you would have realized that I value my Over-inflated head-bone WAY to much to subject it to such high-velocity impacts...<g>

Actually, some surveying Guru's I've been posting with off-Forum have suggested Helmets as devices for carrying Lights; they prefer to work with their Primary's stowed. If you look closely at my Olde Pic, I have an old Q-light mounted...the Helmet torch ALSO may prove useful in Overhead Photography...

That is indeed very good point, i didn't think about that. Now i imagine Norm's in helmet with antlers and primary lights hangin on it like halogens on those pickup trucks at Telford :-)

Spotted same and will probably order...is the foam removable non-destructively? I saw Bell skateboard helmets yesterday that were great EXCEPT for the fact that the foam was firmly affixed...

The website pics were GREAT, Thanks! MUST get to work on my macro chops...

I have a helmet that my dad bought a long time ago (Pretty sure it was made by DiveRite mabe in the late 70's). I rarly feel the need to use it.

I'm sure you can still purchase helmets intended for caving that arnt overly priced (how rare is that, lol)

Yeah, I DOUBT that my 'sight-seers' pace would be injurious to my age-hardened noggin...just looking for an 'armature' for head-mounted lights...

Now looking at the Black Diamond half-hat mentioned in an earlier post...

Hey Norm,
I removed the foam with a long flat head screw diver, shoved it into the center of each side and it popped out in one chunk. I was amazed at small miracles.

I have been looking at some new parachuting helmets and Holly Cow they are cool. The $300.00 price is somewhat restrictive but they look awesome.

If you get a chance to molest (oh, I mean handle) the half dome check the cut in the back of the helmet with your hood it should not be a problem but arching your head back you want to make sure you have enough space mine eventually will have to be cut back a bit.

Also you might want to put a elastic loop in the back to attach your lights brass clips to if you are using lights with clips attached to them- safety factor.

Happy hunting mate.

What models, specifically, are you looking at? And I assume, based on this thread, you're looking at them to use them for caving....correct?

I have several skydiving helmets....but none that I'm willing to take in the water! :-D

Andrew,

I ordered one from a NC outfitter late yesterday, and hope to have it by this weekend...

Thanks for the tip on removal! Nowadays, I eschew hoods, using (when necessary) a beanie or, now that I have won one, a neoprene homie ballcap...will dry dive both to see which is better...

Thanks to ALL (as per usual) for the advice !!

Andrew,

So far, NO JOY at removing the foam...mine seems to have been "potted" into a silicon caulk-like goo...all the screwdriver managed to do was attempt to deform the plastic outer shell...I MAY consider Xacto gouges...

:(

Andrew,

NEVERMIND!

I FINALLY got the foam out...seems it is held only with small areas of goo at the front and back...got my cardio workout box checked off, but now free of annoying foam! Testing tomorrow in the Ballroom to follow...
