If you have a Optima or Hammerhead that you use for Cave Diving you might have experienced the same issues I have with handsets that are difficult to read (and get worst as we age) and having to always push a button to bring on the backlight so that you can read the display. I modified my handsets to use a OLED and here are some pictures of the results.

pic 1 - new OLED and old LCD without backlight
pic 2 - new OLED and old LCD with backlight
pic 3 - same as pic 2 but what it looks like in a cave.

If your interested in doing the modification yourself (no electrical skill or special tools needed) you can purchase the parts and step by step instruction from me. $100 per handset plus shipping. Shipping is $6 within USA and $20 international. Shipping is the same if one or two handsets. PM me if your interested.

I use rechargeable batteries so I do not have any battery life concerns but for those that might I tested a OLED handset (display mode only) with rechargeable SAFT batteries in ice water and discontinued the test after 9 hours with the battery still reading 3.5V.

I have already changed out my primary and it's not that hard. The instructions that John has made are easy to understand. There is more information on the conversions over on the Rebreather World forum.

If you know how to use a screw driver and side cutters your fully qualified. It takes about 30 minutes start to finish per handset and that is going really slow and cleaning things up. If you want to see that actual step by step instructions I can provide them to you. All you have to do is send me your email address and sign up for a free Dropbox account so that I get an additional 250M of online storage and can provide you the link on my Dropbox account to view the instruction file.

If your interested you should go over to RBW and read the thread as it now has some impressions from a couple of the guys that have completed the modification and one guy even did a stress test of the battery life by timing it on the surface with the solenoid firing thru it cycle continuously during the test.

+1 for John, his mod is pretty cool and he's very helpful about installing it.
