View Full Version : Thanksgiving Day, US tradition and cave divers

Hi all,
I must admit (proudly!) that I am a foreigner and Thanksgiving tradition is something I am not familiar with at all. Thus, I treat it as a nice long weekend. Now, the weekend would be even better if there were some wet rocks involved.
Hence, an innocent question arises:
Do people go diving during thanksgiving holidays, or do you all stay at home, eat turkey and do some equipment maintenance (also known as spending time with family)? Do you think there are chances of finding any buddies/guides/instructors/cave monsters who would like to go for a couple of dives during that time?
Any responses, comments, remarks and complaints highly appreciated :).
Best regards,
Theriel
I always go cavediving on all US holidays, and that included Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There are always plenty of people to dive with, even Christmas day.

I'm going to do my best to see wet rocks in Florida, Mexico, or wherever the little jet takes me on Thanksgiving.

Many of us will take advantage of the long holiday weekends just for the purpose of looking at those wet rocks that you speak of.

The winter holidays seem to have more and plenty of cave divers than summer. All of the holidays see an increase though. We tend to alternate between family and caves for X-mas but always go diving for New Years and T-give.

As my mother and other family members are getting up in years (she's 80), it's getting more and more important to them for our family gatherings to include as many people as possible. So lately I've been spending all day Thanksgiving (Thursday) with family, and then heading to Florida to dive Friday through Sunday.

If your not tied down w/ family commitments, the holidays make it soooo much easier to turn both Thanksgiving and Christmas into 10 day cave diving extravaganzas.....
Its the perfect time of year for cave diving...

I eat turkey and go cave diving, but not necessarily in that order...and I'm a direct descendent of a WWII Colonel, and Confederate corporal, and a Revolutionary patriot.
Christmas and New Years are the only holidays I'm not able to turn into a dive trip, yet.

Ohhh and the spread that Cathy at Dive Outpost puts out on Thanksgiving and Christmas is NOT to be missed! It's a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays with 35 of your closet and sometimes newest friends :)

Dave,
Nice meeting you this past Saturday at the NFSA event.
So, are you a SAR or SCV (or CSA) member?
By the way, Thanksgiving came to us from England and the first one was not up at Plymouth but likely on the James River circa 1619 near present day Westover, Virginia.

Hi, Gene.
Yes, the pleasure was all mine. No, I'm not a member of those societies, but I would like to submit an application once I gather the documentation. How 'bout you?

While growing up, our family history was often brought up so when my son was about to be born I felt compelled to get involved with genealogy to get it in order for him. (As it had been done somewhat for me but I wanted to build on it and add more info and the internet made that a lot easier in the 1990's, but of course you still have to verify your sources.)
I applied for membership in the SAR and SCV among others and I was active for awhile but then I started to get busier with work (as well as technical diving) so I pretty much put it on the back burner. I accomplished most of what I wanted to though, including writing a short family narrative history with sources, etc.
When you feel like applying to the SAR or others let me know as I can put you in contact with people who can make the process easier. (And there is an active Clearwater chapter.)

Cool...I'll do that.
Thanks!

Our favorite Thanksgiving so far was spent diving Peacock all day to come back to stay at Dive Outpost and enjoy their turkey and festivities.
Cathy cooks a mean turkey and some awesome carrot souffle.
If we weren't already in Florida in October we'd be going out for Thanksgiving at Dive Outpost.
Forrest adds to the experience with uplifting stories of body recoveries around the fire while waiting for the dinner to finish.
What more could you want?
