I think the photo gallery would get quite a bit more usage if the photos were able to be hotlinked ot other websites.

Speaking for myself, I use another forum to upload my photos to that allows hotlinking. This allows me to upload on one website, but post the files in many. That flexibility does not exist here. If I were to upload a photo here, and want to share that file elsewhere, I'd have to upload the file to a second location as well - which is just a waste of my time.

BTW, as not to dissappoint Sludge.... My first car was a 1973 Superbeetle, I liked it alot, especially the leakyashell sunroof. A highschool classmate rear ended me and pushed me into another car, totalling it out. The insurance money was enough for me to get a 1966 Beetle, which I totally loved with the chrome over-rider bumpers and big headlights. Ended up dumping a 1600cc in it, which made it move pretty good. I've since sold that car... but damn I miss it... One day, with a little free time and money, maybe I'll build another. This is how my screenname came into fruition BTW.

You can hot link to any image in the gallery. You just need it's web address which you can find by:

(Firefox) right clicking on any photo and copying the image location or see the location in the View Image Info option

(Explorer) right clicking on any photo and checking the address/url in the Properties

The last time I tried to hotlink anything from the gallery here, ontp a forum other than CDF, the link would be broken on the other forum...

I'm not talking about hotlinking onto CDF, I'm talking about hotlinking a file from the CDF gallery onto another forum - whether it be ScubaBoard, thedecostop, thetechdiver, ect.

www.photobucket.com

or you could host it yourself. let me know when you want to build that personal website you were typing about (if you can get that $200 domain name you wanted)

I used to host them myself, but the gallery program I was using went to **** and I got tired of keeping the website up.

Scubaboard works fine for image hosting, actually...

This thread was more about having more traffic in the gallery at CDF, and why I personally don't use it.

Hotlinking does nothing for traffic at the site the images are hosted on except up bandwidth.

I know, since I "hotlink" my own images... ;)

I've actually gone to the site by right clicking the image to see if I can find more images similar to the hot linked image.

There in nothing in place to stop hot linking an image.
just have to use the correct html / bb codes
direct link for example would be

http://www.cavediver.net/forum/gallery/files/1/4/7/aryhelmet001.jpg

bb forum code would be

http://www.cavediver.net/forum/gallery/files/1/4/7/aryhelmet001_thumb.jpg (http://www.cavediver.net/forum/gallery/showimage.php?i=9783)

and source image code would be

<img src="http://www.cavediver.net/forum/gallery/files/1/4/7/aryhelmet001.jpg" alt="15W LED helmet DIY light" />i did mess up the codes above so that the actual code would show up in the forms instead of the image. but you get the idea.

you have to remember the the forum is displaying a parsed linked, you will see
........ in the link above. so if you don't copy the link right over to the next forum / site
you may be posting a link with ..... in them so of course it will break
