View Full Version : What gauges do you use for SM?

I have been primarily diving BM in the caves for the past few years but am in the process of switching over to a SM setup. In BM, I use a 2" brass and glass SPG. What do you use for SM? The 2.0" seems a bit big? The compact ones I am seeing are all plastic and cost twice as much as the 2.0s? Right now I am playing in open water with cheapo plastic ones I pulled out of some old oceanic consoles but they are certainly not a good option for anything more than just playing around.

I use 2" OMS ones. They are big, but they work and I like them.

I use two DR with the large dial (easier to see) and 6" hoses.

First there was the 2 inch. Too big.
Second was the small Dive Rite. Too small.
Bought two Hog gauges, 1.5 inch. Perfect!

The 1.5" are pretty sweet. You got to have good eyes but they are small and thin. Mine were metals.

2 inch Dive-rites. I like to see em without having to focus my eyes much. Not too big at all to me since I bend and clip mine up so they wont scoop up mud.

The B&G guages sure are sexier, but they also weigh a bit more and can cause sagging, which can suck depending on how you route the guages. Im using the cheapo plastic dive rite guages at this point - but my eyes don't suck.

I 'm pretty sure these are the same as the 1.5's on the dive gear express site, but with a HOG faceplate on them. I have both kinds and they look identical except for the branding. Divegear sells them for 54. Just picked two of these up last week.

Ill probably end up with a pair of these next time Im out at Edds. Matt brings up a good point about weight, it was one of the things I was worried about on the 2.0" - they seemed to sag.

I 'm pretty sure these are the same as the 1.5's on the dive gear express site.

I recently looked at every thin-line 1.5" SPG I could find and discovered that all of the naked 1.5" thin-line gauges are identical: made in Italy, polycarbonate face, metal body, just with different logos. Prices range from $55 to $80...it really comes down to how much you want to spend for the logo! I'd love to find some that have *NO* logo on them at all. Even better, I'd like to find some place that could print custom logos.

HOG 1.5" on 6" hoses

1.5 inch on the ends of my "six inch tank antennas". I switched from the two inch thinking they might ride a little better and I am very happy. I also like the way they behave out of the water. They seem less prone to getting banged around for whatever reason.

Of coarse I have a bi-focal dive mask so I can read them (along with my computer) :smt102

But then again, a little more fidgeting with the two inch gauges might have done the trick.
