View Full Version : Where do you put your can light.

I have a Hollis SMS and find that I have to put the can in my front of the tank on the right side as to not mess with the tank placement.
On my BP/W I have it on my side like normal.
Where do you place yours?

I have the same rig and I have just moved my to the small rings in the back. It was being quite bothersome on the side with the tanks so I had to move it.

I butt mount mine. I used to clip it to the 1-inch d-rings until I was pushing through a small passage and somehow squeezed it in between the ceiling and my back and suddenly I found myself in the dark. I now have a longer cord and clip it to the bottom of my rails.

Diving my Nomad, so far I continue to leave it on my waist using one of the DR "stretchy things". Allows my to place the can on my waist back next to the wing w/o have to thread and unthread the webbing. It seems to ride rather unobtrusively in the space between my stage and my SM bottle. Of coarse I may change something this weekend and not like it anymore

With my Nomad, I butt mount mine on the 1" D rings with a switch that can be turned off in a tight space but I did need to have a longer cord put on it.

Mine is butt mounted with a Nomad as well. I dont have any problem reaching the switch and the standard cord length is perfect. A bud has the Hollis and butt mounts his too.

For butt mounting I like a cord length between 60" and 72" in length, which have found optimum to be 67",for my height which 6' 1". The cord runs up my right side, under the waist strap, and makes one loop around my arm. This seems like a lot,but it keeps stress off the gland going into the lid, reduces wire breakage due to the cord being pulled at a sharp angle, allows me to swap the light head between left and right arm for scootering, surveying etc,and keeps my arm freedom of movement in all overhead planes. I do like the right angle gland the Light Monkey has because it will reduce several inches of cord, because a tight cord will really stress this region. I do recall Sartek at one time used a 90 degree compression fitting,so perhaps there is a nonproprietary fitting that could be adapted to different manufacturers canister lids.

I stick it on my waist, its not really intrusive at all, and I can take it off if needbe.

How big is the can ? A lot of folks with small diameter can put them under the wing above the tank. For a bigger can, it's better to butt mount it but as said before you need a longer cord.

In my initial class I had the LM 12W butt mounted on the crotch strap. I sent it back to LM for the SM alteration when I got back and I'll be trying it out hanging from the drop rings on the back of the Razor harness next time out.

I agree with Matt.
I am glad I am not the only one still wearing my light canister on my waist. It is slim enough that it doesnt sitck below my tanks, or torso.

I agree with Matt.

I use an Armadillo and mine is on my right side. Never had any interference with tanks, pockets, etc.

When horizontal is the can above or below the tanks? Mine is right below so far.

The tanks are above and behind the can (valve in my armpit).

I butt mount mine.

+1 out of the way of cables and stuff that you find inside a wreck

On the right side of my waist strap, just like in backmount, right back against the wing. I never notice it there. I have one of the new Dive Rite elastic canister mounting things on it which holds it securely but is easy to put on and take off, whether in the water or on land.

Forrest, I can see how Mat and Tegg have room to waist mount their lights (no offense guys ;) ), but I'm not seeing how you do! :D

Mostly, I think it comes down to not using a 2 liter bottle of a battery canister.

I have to admit that my waist strap is plenty long enough for my slimline canister with a lot of room left over!

I have seen Forrest in person. He is not thinner then his wing when deflated.

Plenty of room for a can battery there, unless you're using one with enough juice to run 400watts of light.

Pssh, like it matters, I'm sure you can hide a canister of any size in that beautiful womb broom of yours :P

the small canister goes like backmount, on the right side waist belt as far back as possible. the large canister goes butt mount with the cord coming up along my left side to my left hand. I also sometimes carry stages on the left and don't like the cord interference, so will switch it around so the cord comes up the right side to my right hand. As Larry Green said (as quoted by Steve Lewis in his book: The six skills and other discussions), "Doing What Works." DW-squared. DIR, get thee behind me!

Ok well after several more dives and trying a few different things I have found the best spot being inside the back of the waist belt underneath the wing. I like to put it on the right side because thats the tank I breath off of first and therefore soon become neutral once I breath down some air. What I dont like is having the light on my right hand when I am running reels (mainly reeling up) because the right hand is the one the doing all the reeling and therefore giving the team a wrong signal.

Which side do you put the light head on?

...Which side do you put the light head on?
Depends on what I am doing. For scootering and reeling, it goes in my left hand. The rest of the time, in my right hand.

My light is on my right hand. Try draping the light around your neck when you are reeling.

I drive my scooter with my left hand primarily so the light is not a problem for me.

Light on left. I started with it on the right then started scootering. It took some getting used to on the left, but now it feels like it belongs on the left.

Canister mounted on right waist with a bungee (5 years like this), light on left hand.

Get the LM 12W LED and it's small enough you could tuck it anywhere. Right side, left side, butt mount, behind your ear.... HEHE, jk. My buddies are butt mounting their bigger can lights in SM config.

When I was diving with my Nomad I kept my 21W LED on my waist. Now that I am diving with a Razor, I butt mount it. I keep my light head on my helmet. I am comfortable with it in either location.
