View Full Version : Underwater Cave Presentation

05-02-2005, 07:33 PM
The Orlando and Central Florida Cavers group is trying to put together a presentation (approximately 30 minutes) on "Underwater Caves" to present to a couple of middle school classes next week. We don't have that much time to put this together, because we were asked to do this on Sunday. Does anyone have any information, which they can share, to help us with the presentation? I was thinking about a slide show and / or a video to go along with the presentation.

Water's Journey :-)

WJ (1 or 2) is closer to 52' run time, but I'm betting somebody has access to an editing bay, and you could "cherry-pick" enough good bullet points to make the proper length...

You might also want to contact Brett Hemphill.

Thanks!

TJ and Jakub R. also recommended Water's Journey. I just placed an order with Beth and I should have it in the mail tomorrow. They are still working on the full version of Water's Journey 2.

Someone should be contacting Brett shortly.

Norm ... Do you have any cave pictures, which we can use in the presentation. You do wonders with your C5050. :)

did you ask Beth if there was a pared down version suitable for showing in schools? I thought they had done that with WJ 1

No, I didn't ask Beth if there was a pared down version for WJ 1. Beth mentioned a pared down version for Water's Journey 2, but it wasn't available through them yet (although it was available from someone else). She mentioned the quality wasn't as good in the pared down version of WJ 2.

I haven't seen WJ 1 yet, so I was going to check it out to see if it's usable as is, or if we need to show certain sections.

You can bring a videotape, or DVD of one of the Cavex2 and show 10 or 15 minutes of it, and bring all your cave gear assembled, including stages, whatever, and give the kids a hands on demonstration also.

I have not seen them all, but the Little River DVD from Cavex is, IMHO, outstanding. The passage in the first 15-20 minutes is small enough that the walls are well illuminated, there is a neat soundtrack overlying the water sounds, and it has some nice beginning exterior shots.

UPS brought my Waters Journey DVD today and I checked it out right away. It's very impressive and right on target for the presentation. This DVD contains both the short version (29 minutes) and the long version (57 minutes).

We were asked to help a 6th grade science teacher, who is teaching the Life Cycle of Water, and she wants us to give a presentation on the Florida Aquifer. They asked us to provide a 45 minute program, and we need to give two presentations, to a total of 60 students. We were also asked to talk about cave diving.

Maya, you're right on target with the short presentation, that's what were going to present.

John, were going to bring cave maps, sidemount gear, a rebreather and lots of other stuff. We plan to pass some items around, while were presenting information.

Nwade, I like your idea of the Little River DVD from Cavex, but I don't think were going to have enough time.

Lastly, Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions here, via e-mail and during phone conversations. You guys were a big help!
