Camp Indian Springs is located in Tallahassee and it’s the home of the Indian Springs underwater cave system. A cleanup day was held on March 19th, 2005. Lots of volunteers got together to help get this camp ready for the 2005 YMCA youth camping season.
Saturday, March 19th was a cool sunny day in North Florida. Our group, of about 20 cave divers, was given a project to help remove a dam, on the southern portion of the pond, at the beginning of the spring run. This dam, composed of sandbags, concrete slabs, plywood, and logs, was partially blocking the water drainage from the pond around Indian Springs.
The dam cleanup group was comprised of people in the water, who had to break up and remove the sandbags and concrete slabs, and people on land, who moved this stuff up a trail into two large piles. Later on, the sandbags were used to create a sandy area and the concrete slabs were discarded into a dumpster.
This cleanup project had a large turnout and a lot of work was accomplished. The YMCA park management appreciated all the work which was completed by the volunteers. Another cleanup project at Camp Indian Springs may occur in September and any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again to everyone who helped!
