regarding the slate seen at http://cavediver.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2001
This is very similar to what I used in the '80's...how do you stow something so big without the dreaded "danglies"??

Yup...GOT one...gave up on it when it made my un-svelt figure even Chubbier...went to Steve for pockets...don't know if the pockets would be big enough for a survey slate tho' ...

I used to keep a Scubapro Navigation Board in mine, until I made several hundred dives without using it. Now it stays in the trailer, but I know it will fit.

I purchased Diverite Wet notes and that helps. I was tucking my slate under my harness and I was rubbing off the information – not good.
If you want a real pocket (just joking) try “deep outdoors” they gave a great pocket.
The expedition- http://www.deepoutdoors.com/expedition.htm
When I am feeling really anal I clip it into my chest strap. It holds damn near anything and it is easy to use. I used small zip ties and surgical tubing through the zipper tabs making it easier to zip open and close.
In mine I have-
In the front pocket- tables, tables, tables, (NAUI, NAVY, PPo2, NOAA O2.)
Back pocket- spare mask, spare thumb reel, slate, light and my compass is attached to the front of the bag. Great bag!
My biggest problem was always the same with all that neoprene you know were the pocket is but it is a pain to reach and look into the pocket. So, I moved it. :-D
Later, Andrew

First, don't get a new one. They changed them last year to make them more ergonomic, and the new one doesn't have the straight edges you need for surveying. I see them on eBay occasionally. Either the LS-1 or the LS-2 work fine.
I have the LS-2. It's 7" long, 3" at its widest point, and the compass module itself is just over 1" high.
I noticed you PMed SeaGhost about Ginnie this weekend. If you plan on diving with her, I'll let her carry my nav board with her so you can try it out.

Russell,
Yeah, I googled the S'Pro, and gasped when I saw the "instead of a slate" wasp-waist shape...reminds my of my Logitec Home Theater remote or a Betty Boop doll...
In days of yore, my survey slates were 5x7's and 8x10's with
mod-ed Ike wrist compasses affixed ...my handwriting was NEVER that great topside, and I found out (after completing a passage survey that even I could not read afterwards) I needed to write BIG!
And YES, I'd like to see your board!
