I was taught by one of the best when it comes to service work, and assembling & disassembling tanks. First, lay your tanks down flat and loosen your band nuts, and slide the bands off the bottom of the tanks. It's a good idea to mark the bands which is top and bottom, and mark the tanks right and left, and also where the bands are on the tank. Next, loosten (how the hell do you spell that?) the lock nuts on each side of center isolator of the manifold. NOTE: before doing anything, make sure all the gas is out of the tanks. When you start unscrewing the isolator, count the number of turns it takes for it to come off. To assemble, make sure the tanks are on a flat level surface. Put the tanks alongside eachother so the open ends of the manifold both face the middle. Place the isolator section in between, and CAREFULLY turn it until both sides have started to thread. The threads are real fine, and real soft, so if you feel any resistance, start over to you don't cross thread it. Once you have started it, turn the isolator the same number of turns as you disassembled it. You can gently wiggle the tanks while doing this to ease assembly. Sometimes the isolator might have a slight bend in it, and the tanks will move back and forth while threading it. Once you are to the approximate amount of turns, stand the tanks up, and have someone put the bands on from the bottom in the same order they came off. Slide the bands to the marks on the tank where they were and slightly snug the tank bolts. Now look closely how the tanks make contact with the inside of the bands. There should be no gap between the tank and the bands in the center portion. If there is, either loosen, or tighten the isolator a turn or two until you achieve proper alignment. Re-snug the bolts and check again until they are parallel. Lay the tanks on the flat surface, and push on them at different places to make sure they don't rock on the floor. They should lay perfectly flat. If everything is good, tighten the bolts, and do a final check. Do not overtighten the bolts. If the center part of the bands starts to bow in, that's too tight. Finally, tighten the lock nuts on each side of the isolator after you position the know where you like it. I hope this helps some. John

Yah, thats how I do it. I wish I could give you a working link so that you can see some pics. I had trouble when IU first assembled a modern doubles setup, I didnt use a crossover tube until recently...
