Going down to Grand Cayman on a cruise. The wife and I wanted to get a couple of dives in.
Do you guys have any suggestions on dive shops to use? Or on dive sites? (North Wall or West Wall)
I'm full cave, she's open water, but we dont want to get stuck on some boat where were forced to dive with a big group. We got stuck on one of those "hand-holder" deals down in the Keys, and it drove us nuts.

Im going on a cruise to Grand Cayman next week and a friend recommended sunset house as a dive operator. He has been there several times and has been happy with them. Which cruise line are you using?

From the dock where the cruise ships tender you to land walk to the right. Just the other side of the harbor is a place but I can't remember the name of it. Maybe Devils Grotto? There is (was?) a nice reef there and it is a simple shore dive. They had gear, weights and tanks for rent. Cheaper than cattle boats, you are on your schedule and it is a decent dive. For a non-overhead environment that is.

Don't bother with the dive operators. For the short time you'll have there Eden Rock is an awesome dive! It's the dive mentioned above. Just a short walk to the right of the peer. You can rent gear at the shop there, I've always traveled with my own gear and rented tanks and weights there. The dive is one of the best I've ever done. You'll need 2 dives to do it justice. It's a simple shore dive. The people at the store will be able to tell you which line to go down etc.. Their web site is below. Highly recommend this dive, it's a bunch of coral caves (you'll always have daylight shining) that seem to go on and on.

My experience of Eden Rock is rather different.
IMHO its a pile of beat up rubble. Might have been nice 20 years and 20,000 Cruise Ships ago. The staff at Eden Rock are the absolute worst I have ever come across in my 10 or so visits to Cayman. Some people really do need to get another job.
For my money Sunset House is much better. And its got a great outdoor bar.

We're taking the 5-night Carnival out of Tampa.

We wanted to do a 2 tank dive, 1 deeper one along the West Wall (if it's worth it), and another shallower dive.
I haven't looked into the shore dives.
Thanks for all the feedback.

Wow, I was there a year and a half ago and thought it was pretty amazing. The coral caves there are the most extensive I've seen anywhere. I guess the staff issue may depend on who you talk with and when you go. I've been to that center and done that dive on 2 different cruises and nothing about the center stuck out positive or negative.
