I dove to the Blue Abyss back in 2008 and I recall reading something about exploration beyond the bottom of the abyss shortly there after but I can't find the article. I don't recall if it was in Advanced Diver mag or here online but I'm pretty sure it was online from a link I found here.

Does anyone know of any exploration past the abyss?

I live in Playa del Carmen since almost 2 years now.

I know lot of friends that reach the buttom in CCR, backmount and sidemount. they all say that there is no exploration possibility.:smt102

You want to come and confirm:yawinkle:

I guess there is some confusion. Although I have never made it to the 230 foot bottom of the Blue Abyss, I have spoken to several knowledgable guides who have, and they both say the cave extends beyond the Blue Abyss.

Then again, maybe they are presenting a front of being knowlegable, but actually have never been that far, and are simply parroting what others have said.

Wish I could come out and confirm, but funds limit that privilege. :?

I never been that deep neither. But I got 3 friends that reach the buttom.

Two of them say that when you are at the buttom you are just over a huge rock and the tunel seem to continue like around and under the rock. They both try to tie-off a reel and go, but they both turn over after less then 10 feets.

I'm also just reporting, never been deeper that 160 in it myself. That still a amazing dive.

send me a mail when you want to check by yourself...

I'll have to check it out next trip. On my last trip early January 2010, I had planned to transport 4 tanks to the Blue Abyss, 3 with 32% and one with 21%, but punted at the last minute with the 4th tank filled 21% and left it in the car. My legs were just too tired from the previous 3 days of two dives a day. I didn't want to swim 2,000 feet into the cave with 4 tanks and cramp up.

The deepest I have been in the Blue Abyss is also 160 feet. During my trip last April, I hired Luis as a guide who toted the 4th tank. I got down to 160 feet and was going to drop deeper, but really didn't want to get seriously narked so far back in the cave. I realize that when I returned to 120 feet or so, the narcosis would immidiately go away, so I'll probably give it another trip next trip.

It is just a lot of work to bring a 4th tank whose only benefit is to be able to drop down below 130 feet (1.6 PPO for 32%). During my trip in January when I took 3 tanks with 32%, I was able to stay 20 minutes at the Blue Abyss and have plenty of gas for the return trip. So three tanks is ideal. A 4th tank is really a lot more work.

I know I read something, somewhere, about divers taking in CCR and pushing the bottom of this. I just can't figure out where I read it.

It was Paul Heinerth that pushed RB beyond the deep restrictions.
I believe that it was an old NACD Journal article 3/98
and Immersed 4/98

He sold the shop, but they may have his phone number. He is a CD instructor, so you can get his email from www.nsscds.org (http://www.nsscds.org), or www.safecaving.com (http://www.safecaving.com)

FYI - It's Scuba West in Hudson, FL. As stated he sold the shop but I'm sure they would have contact info.

PaulHeinerth@verizon.net is the most recent one I have for Paul.

I stand corrected. I corresponded with Paul. He went deep with rebreathers into The Pit in Mexico...not the Blue Abyss back ten years ago. Just shows how time can cloud your memories. Sorry for the confusion.
