A while back, mmcauliffe put up a poll about membership in cave diving organizations. I need some data on this as well to support what was done in the Jackson Blue economic valuation paper i am working on. Looks like it will be published in the journal Resource and Energy Economics:

http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505569/description#description

So please respond...thanks!

The link worked for me and I easily found the membership type/level/duration I wanted, but then the shopping cart and billing info was yellow type on a white background. Maybe it's my eyes (I read in the dark as a child, not that other thing), but dang it was hard to read.

I'm sure jim will fix that soon. He's been doing an amazing job with it so far.

Jim, I liked it. Worked great.

Bill, you have constructed a oxymoron poll. You haphazardly used the word "organization" as if it really applied to any of the entities listed. GUE appears to be more of a regiment than organization, and I have not seen anything really organized coming out of the others for many years.

I was using organiztion in the dynamic sense, as in meteorology. Like a hurricane (also a great song by my favorite artist) the degree of organization can wax and wane (mixing a few metaphors here but then i like a good mixed metaphor). I agree that they all appear to be in a waning mode at the moment. Imagine (also a great song) a merger, there might well be some economies of scale to be gained, especially in publications...they could combine to produce just one quality magazine and keep everything else the same. Everyone would probably be better off and no one would be worse off...in economics we call that pareto optimal...it is irrational not to make a move like that. I can only see better offs here. maybe someone else is good at the worse offs?

Well, metaphorically speaking, go back to your asshat avatar.

Can you give me another 9-8 suspension?

I was being facetious. I'm sure "Imagine" has more 9-8 suspensions than any other song in the pop era.

But which agency or shop would get the coveted advertising space to advance their membership... We can barely get these agencies to agree on standards and safety, much less an editorial review board...

What about NFSA? Don't they get any love? WCDC should get some love as well.

I'm bad about renewals - NACD is pretty simple, fill out one form, drop it in the mail with a check and I'm done. NSS-CDS requires two memberships, twice the effort, twice the chance of losing a form on my end before it gets in the mailbox, and from what I've seen of the politics, I don't need to get involved in it. Yup, the political climate counts - I'm in the "can't we all get along" camp, as opposed to the "let's fight it out at the meetings" camp. I just want to dive.

Or, you could just pay off your life membership, and then you don't have to mail anything. ever. Of course, you might have to live with a lifetime of regret, depending on how shamefully your "organization" acts.

Also- probably the GUE numbers are artificially low, I'm sure they have plenty of "stroke"-free forums of their own.

GUE does have a forum but it does not have a lot of activity. Bill

At this point we are just looking at us demand. My poll was just directed at the domestic market. Bill

Not to worry, that's next...we are going to put a diving value on ginnie (well the devil's system actually) and there's a large international component to that :)
