I would love to make that, except I will be getting training that day from some other diver at a location that we need to finish a survey on to make a good map...

One slate-left over from open water class several years ago.
Wrist compass-used, bought off ebay ( the boy scout ones work also)
Pencil-little ones from the grocery store free from the Lotto stand
Piece of back rubber tubing-Can't remember where I bought it
2 clips I bought at home depo
100 foot tape I bought at home depo
I stick the pencil in the tubing end, tie it to the slate. Attach compass by its strap, attach clip and stick that on my D ring
I take the 100 foot tape with attached clip that is left over if I need the exact width for some reason. It doesn't get used much.
Total outlay of cash is less than $50
Call me if you ever need someplace to practice. Cindy Butler :D

I have a liquid filled orienteering compass attached to a dive slate. Lay the dive slate parallel to the line and spin the knob to North... For sketching, I use mylar sheets and a clipboard - mylar is taped to both sides of the clipboard. I wouldn't recommend more than one sheet of mylar per side as the sheets can rub against each other and erase all the data.... Its pretty discouraging to surface after a long survey dive only to realize all the data you just collected rubbed off.

I'm using a compass (cheap-o from REI) zip-tied to a large slate (upper left corner) with several pencils.
a 100' tape from Lowes.
Small plastic tags for marking the stations which I think came from Graingers.
