Sears (Craftsman) had a version of the Disto laser measuring device. They are being surplussed on eBay for around $50. Too bad they won't work underwater.

Go to eBay, and search for:
Craftsman AccuTrac Laser Measuring Tool 48298

Don't get tricked into getting this one, it isn't nearly as good. Note the different part number.
Craftsman Laser Guided Measuring Tool 48252

Nah - you need the DistoX (Leica A3 with added electronic compass/clino and bluetooth download to your PDA). You just go caving, wave your DistoX around and come out with a fully drawn up computerised cave survey.

Quite seriously though, I've been busy resurveying a local (dry) cave system with laser rangefinders and electronic compass/clinometer. It is so easy that I can do it on my own.

Which compass/clinometer do you use?

I bought a Leica A3 new but the shop sent me a D3 which is the replacement model as the A3 is no longer made. Unfortunately only the A3 can be upgraded to the all-singing DistoX so I've gone down the route of having two instruments and writing notes rather than using the DistoX and PDA.

see: www.sump4.com/dowloads/fairy_cave_quarry.3d for the work in progress (you'll need either Loch (the Therion 3D viewer) or the latest version of SURVEX (1.1.13) to view the cave model.

I love the picture on their website :-)

The export version isn't cheap!

Christian Chenier (SQS) bought my A3 from me and had the Disto X chip that Beat Heeb makes ;installed. He raves and raves about it. I wonder if it might be prudent to try and chase down an A3 these days before prices get even higher.

Is there any chance or plans for the "cheap" Disto to have some capability like the Disto x?

Someone in our club bough the Stanley version of a Disto..P-O-S!!! in comparison to a Disto

Now I have found another neat surveying toy :-)

If only they had one that would work underwater!

It is unbelievable how competent and all encompassing that system is!! The change in cave survey in such a short time is phenomenal..indeed they NEED to increase Underwater capability like this.

At least Topofils have been eradicated underwater?? that is progress no?

Any experience of this? I'm thinking of it as a cheaper alternative to a Shetland Attack Pony.

I have a Disto-X board waiting at home to install into my A3- I have been waiting to use it for some time- and of course, I have been gone the entire year, so it sits, but next month, I will be able to install and use it in cave... cant wait.
