We're heading to Belize in December. The girlfriend wants to look at the pretty fishes. My reward to hang out with her? A little cave diving! :D

That is if there is any cave diving in Belize. I haven't had much luck finding a lead. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Giant Cave is in Belize, not sure if they let you dive it anymore. There are some others in the jungle, but it's a lot of effort to get to them.

Giant Cave takes knowing the right people, and even then it's not easy. There's nothing else there that is easy to do without an expedition.

Well, I have plenty of time between now and December to get in touch with "the right people." Would you be willing to PM me some names so I can get started? :-)

BTW, I'm not necessarily looking for easy. :-)

I'll see what I can come up with. But let's put it this way, even one of the original explorers in that system has told me with the recent local political changes there he's not sure he could even get back in there.

Belize has nationalized all the caves. You need a state permit to explore any of them now :-(

Permits are not hard to get there as long as you know the right people.:)

Contact Paul Heinerth concerning Giant Cave. He is the one who used 55 gallon drums to lift large rocks and open up the entrance back in the day. He was also part owner of the dive shop on Cay Calker, so may still have some contacts for permitting etc.

Paulheinerth@verizon.net

Tell him I suggested he contact you.

Safe diving,

Brian

I was there in Jan., mangroves have all but closed the entrance, it's still possible to dive it but there is some red tape involved. I know the people to talk to so if you go that way let me know and I will help you out. However, vis is crappy due to septic tanks and some other factors from the locals.

If you go to Belize, visit my mother in law's island resort on St. Georges's Cay...
