Introduction Welcome to the first draft edition of my cave diving glossary. I began this project just about a year ago when I decided to take my cavern course and worked on the lexicon as I progressed through Intro, Apprentice, and Cave along the NSS-CDS certification path. I was first certified in 1979 as the result of a YMCA program at Boston College and my first 300 dives were mostly off the New England coast and included many trips to the Chester Poling and a few to the U853. I moved away from the northeast and dove only sporadically until registering for a cavern course at Ginnie Springs in January of 2003. My interest in cave diving was sparked from a passion for understanding Florida’s freshwater springs and my desire as an environmental economist to work in the area of water resources. Since my Cave certification in November 2003, I am about half way to an Abe Davis award (NSS-CDS award for 100 safe cave dives). As I returned into diving I became acquainted with new diving practices and methods that have become known as technical diving and as cave diving. In learning the theory, practice, and jargon of these new diving paradigms I encountered a lot of new terminology, acronyms, and concepts and could not find a single place in which these terms were defined or an existing technical/cave diving glossary. This glossary grew out of my own desire to get a handle on the theory and practice of current cave and technical diving. What follows is certainly not an exhaustive list and it was compiled from numerous sources including various certification manuals, my notes from courses, internet documents, web diving forums, books, and so on. In most instances the definitions have been corroborated from multiple sources. There are no guarantees that everything listed is correct. All errors and omissions are certainly my fault. If you find any errors or omissions, I would appreciate an email containing the correction or addition to the list. Thanks! Dive Safe! |
